Removing and installing camshaft drive timing chain, vehicles with no vacuum pump — VW
Removing and installing camshaft drive timing chain, vehicles with no vacuum pump on VW: 17 steps, 2 torque figures, engines AXZ, BHK, BHL, BLV.
Workshop procedure for VW — the exact step sequence and torque figures, straight from real workshop data.
🧭 Before you start
Fits: VW Touareg I (7L, 2002–2010)
- Special tools named: 27 mm open-end spanner
Don't miss
- This position is only reached after every 4th turn.
- Check that dowel sleeve (1) is inserted to locate setting tool T10332. The notch (arrow) on the chain sprocket (2) must be on top.
- Some of the timing chain links are copper coloured. These chain links are to be used as an aid to installation. The 3 copper-coloured chain links next to each other must be placed on the oil pump chain sprocket.
- First, fit timing chain onto oil pump chain sprocket. Marking must align with middle copper coloured chain link (A).
- Fit timing chain onto chain drive sprocket of high-pressure pump. The notch (arrow) must align with copper-coloured chain link.
🔩 Torque settings
Values can differ between engine variants — check the code stamped on your block.
| Torque | Fastener / step |
|---|---|
| 50 Nm (37 lb-ft) | Install tensioner for timing chain (arrow |
| 60 Nm (44 lb-ft) | Remove adjusting tool and camshaft bar A and tighten camshaft adjuster |
ℹ️ Always cross-check the exact figure against your vehicle's factory manual before final tightening — a wrong torque can damage the engine. These values are extracted from workshop data and may not cover every variant or revision.
📋 Procedure
- Turn engine -at vibration damper- to setting marks. [Note: This position is only reached after every 4th turn.]
- Check that dowel sleeve (1) is inserted to locate setting tool T10332. The notch (arrow) on the chain sprocket (2) must be on top.
- Secure position of high-pressure pump drive sprocket using adjusting tool T10332.
- Undo and remove bolt (arrow) for guide rail.
- Removing camshaft adjuster .
- Unscrew bolt (arrow) and remove guide rail (1).
- Take timing chain out upwards.
- Insert timing chain through hole in cylinder head from above.
- Install guide rail (1) and tighten bolt (arrow). [Note: Some of the timing chain links are copper coloured. These chain links are to be used as an aid to installation. The 3 copper-coloured chain links next to each other must be placed on the oil pump chain sprocket.]
- First, fit timing chain onto oil pump chain sprocket. Marking must align with middle copper coloured chain link (A).
- Fit timing chain onto chain drive sprocket of high-pressure pump. The notch (arrow) must align with copper-coloured chain link.
- Tighten bolt (1) for guide rail.
- Insert inlet camshaft adjuster »24E« into timing chain in such a way that the copper-coloured chain link is aligned with the marking on the camshaft adjuster. Bolt camshaft adjuster onto camshaft and tighten bolt hand-tight.
- Insert exhaust camshaft adjuster »32A« into timing chain in such a way that copper-coloured chain link is aligned with marking on camshaft adjuster. Bolt camshaft adjuster onto camshaft and tighten bolt hand-tight. [Note: Mark »32A« may differ in appearance depending on design of camshaft adjuster.]
- Check position of copper coloured chain links to adjustment markings. [Note: The copper coloured chain links no longer align with the adjustment markings once the crankshaft has been turned.]
- Install tensioner for timing chain (arrow). Specified torque 50 Nm. — 50 Nm (37 lb-ft)
- Remove adjusting tool T10332 and camshaft bar T10068 A and tighten camshaft adjuster. Specified torque: 60 Nm + 1/4 turn (90°). [Note: Only counterhold at camshaft with 27 mm open-end spanner (arrow). The camshaft bar T10068 A must not be fitted when camshaft adjuster is loosened or tightened.] — 60 Nm (44 lb-ft)

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
