Dynamically checking and adjusting commencement of injection — VW

Dynamically checking and adjusting commencement of injection on VW: 25 steps, 4 torque figures, engines AFN, AGD, AGP, AGR.

Workshop procedure for VW — the exact step sequence and torque figures, straight from real workshop data.

25 steps 14 engine codes 4 torque figures engine codes and torque figures merged from 5 documented variants

🧭 Before you start

Fits: VW Passat B5 (3B)

  • Special tools named: 22 mm ring spanner
  • Renewed: stretch bolts

Don't miss

  • If the commencement of injection is advanced, turn injection pump in direction of engine rotation; if the commencement of injection is retarded, turn counter to direction of engine rotation.
  • Loosen and re-tighten (25 Nm) the injector lines on the injection pump after dynamically adjusting the injection pump. This relieves the strain on lines and prevents vibration breakages.
  • The securing bolts are stretch bolts which must only be used once. Therefore always renew stretch bolts.
  • Never loosen the hub nut (2). Otherwise the injection pump basic setting may be altered and this cannot be reset with workshop equipment

📋 Procedure

  1. Connect fault readerV.A.G 1551 or vehicle system testerV.A.G 1552 and select control unit for engine electronics with "“address word 01”". Engine must be idling. (Connect fault readerV.A.G 1551 and select engine electronics control unit .)
  2. Press buttons 0 and 4 for function "“Initiate basic settings”" and confirm entry with Q button.
  3. Press 0 button three times for "“display group number 0”" and confirm entry with Q button.
  4. Check coolant temperature in display zone 7. Specification: less than 73 (equates to 85 °C) [Note: Providing commencement of injection is within the specification zone (C) during the check, no adjustment is required. After repairs, e.g. removing and installing injection pump, adjusting timing, the commencement of injection is to be set to the mean value (dashed line) of specification zone (C).]
  5. If installed, remove upper toothed belt guard. [Note: If the commencement of injection is advanced, turn injection pump in direction of engine rotation; if the commencement of injection is retarded, turn counter to direction of engine rotation.]

  1. Loosen injection pump securing bolts approx. one turn, leaving the easiest bolt to reach till last.
  2. Hold injection pump by hand under tension in direction to be adjusted.
  3. Carefully loosen last securing bolt until the pump can be turned slightly and then retighten securing bolt.
  4. Observe figures in zone 2 and if necessary adjust again until the mean value for specified range (C) is displayed.
  5. Tighten injection pump securing bolts to 25 Nm. — 25 Nm (18 lb-ft)
  6. Check commencement of injection again.
  7. Press the → button.
  8. Press buttons 0 and 6 for function "“End data transfer”" and confirm entry with Q button. [Note: Loosen and re-tighten (25 Nm) the injector lines on the injection pump after dynamically adjusting the injection pump. This relieves the strain on lines and prevents vibration breakages.]
  9. Switch off engine, the fault readerV.A.G 1551 remains connected.
  10. Loosen securing bolts (1) for injection pump pulley. [Note: The securing bolts are stretch bolts which must only be used once. Therefore always renew stretch bolts.]
  11. Place a 22 mm ring spanner on hub nut (2) to hold pump shaft.
  12. Loosen third securing bolt of injection pump pulley and turn pump shaft slightly: [Note: Never loosen the hub nut (2). Otherwise the injection pump basic setting may be altered and this cannot be reset with workshop equipment]
  13. Tighten new securing bolts for injection pump pulley to 20 Nm. — 20 Nm (15 lb-ft)
  14. Screw in new securing bolts for injection pump pulley one after the other.
  15. Start engine and run at idling speed.
  16. Select basic setting (04) again, measured value block 000.
  17. Observe figures in zone 2 and if necessary adjust again until the mean value for specified range (C) is displayed.
  18. Tighten the securing bolts for the injection pump pulley 1/4 turn further (90°).
  19. Press the → button.
  20. Press buttons 0 and 6 for function "“End data transfer”" and confirm entry with Q button.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.

Seen a figure that does not match your manual? Write to us — we correct it and note when. support@torqfix.com
