Draining and adding coolant — VW
Draining and adding coolant on VW: 18 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.
Workshop procedure for VW — the exact step sequence and torque figures, straight from real workshop data.
🧭 Before you start
Fits: platform code BE1
- Opens: coolant
- Special tools named: VAS 6096
Don't miss
- Observe regulations for disposing of used coolant.
- The coolant pumps must be actuated in order to fill the coolant system .
- Fill with coolant up to max. mark on expansion tank (1).
📋 Procedure
- Remove noise insulation General body repairs, exterior66Noise insulation; Assembly overview - noise insulation.
- Pull out retaining clip (2) in (direction of arrow A).
- Pull coolant hose (1) in (direction of arrow B) off radiator.
- Drain coolant into drip tray for workshop hoistVAS 6208. [Note: Observe regulations for disposing of used coolant.] [Note: The water used for mixing has a major influence on the effectiveness of the coolant. Because the content of water differs from country to country and even region to region, the quality of the water to be used has been defined. Distilled water fulfils all requirements. Therefore, we recommend using distilled water when mixing coolant for topping up or renewing coolant.Use only coolant additives which conform with the Electronic Parts Catalogue. Other coolant additives may reduce corrosion protection substantially. The resulting damage could lead to loss of coolant and subsequent severe damage to the motor. The correct coolant solution ratio helps prevent damage due to freezing and corrosion as well as scaling. Moreover, the boiling temperature is raised. Therefore, the cooling system must be filled all year round with coolant additive.Because of its higher boiling point, the coolant improves motor reliability under heavy loads, particularly in countries with tropical climates.ONLY refractometer T10007AT10007A may be used for determining current anti-freeze value.Frost protection must be guaranteed down to -25°C as a minimum and, in countries with arctic conditions, down to approx. -36°C. Increasing the frost protection is permissible only if climatic conditions require stronger frost protection. But frost protection must never be lower than -48 °C, or the cooling effect of the coolant will be impaired. The coolant concentration must not be reduced by adding water even in warmer seasons and in warmer countries. The frost protection must be at least -25 °C.Read anti-freeze value from the scale for the antifreeze added. The temperature read off the refractometer T10007A is the »ice flocculation point«. At this temperature, flakes of ice can start forming in the coolant.Never reuse old coolant.Use only a water/anti-freeze mixture as a slip agent for coolant hoses.] [Note: To ensure optimum protection against corrosion, use only distilled water for mixing with coolant additives.]
- Remove old O-ring (2) from coolant hose (3).
- Moisten new O-ring with coolant, and insert it into coolant hose.
- Push retaining clip (2) in opposite (direction of arrow A) into its installation position.
- Push coolant hose (1) in opposite (direction of arrow B) onto connection until it can be heard to engage.
- Press again on coolant hose (1), and then pull to check that plug-in connector is correctly engaged.
- Screw adapter for cooling system testerV.A.G 1274/8 onto expansion tank.
- Fill coolant circuit using cooling system charge unit VAS 6096Operating instructions for cooling system charge unit VAS 6096. [Note: The coolant pumps must be actuated in order to fill the coolant system .]
- Actuate coolant pumps .
- Fill with coolant up to max. mark on expansion tank (1).
- Fit cooling system testerV.A.G 1274 B onto coolant expansion tank.
- Apply pressure to cooling system .
- Seal coolant expansion tank (1) with cap (2).
- Carry out test drive to bring coolant to operating temperature.
- Check coolant level and top up as needed.

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
Seen a figure that does not match your manual? Write to us — we correct it and note when. support@torqfix.com
