Clamp column tube lower part using vice clamps.

Assemble clamping device T10021 (nut turned back as shown in illustration) and pull steering column apart.
To do this, slide the sleeve forcibly back and forth on the threaded spindle -arrows- ensuring that the nut is struck forcibly.

The special tool T10021 is used as a slide hammer in this case.

Continue hammering until the steering column is against its stop.

Now the securing spring stops them moving further apart.

Unclamp steering column.
Release securing spring -arrow- by driving through hole in column tube lower part -1- using a drive and light blows of a hammer.
Clamp steering column.
Pull steering column apart completely.
Pull steering column lower part out of column tube lower part.
Take rubber ring and spreader rivet pin out of column tube lower part.

Assembling

Slide lower spring onto lower steering column.
Grease seat of securing spring on steering column and securing spring all-round using universal grease G 052 735 A2.
Fit securing spring -1- and assembly aid -2-.

Insert lower steering tube into column tube lower part and slide on rubber ring -arrow-.

Connect steering columns together and clamp.

Set steering columns to dimension "a".

Dimension "a" = 627 mm

Insert securing spring -1- and connect column tubes together.

Slide column tubes together until the holes align with each other -arrow-.
Fit spreader rivet.

Insert mounting bracket -6- in mounting on column tube.

Observe installation position: Plate tabs (arrows) must be guided under the spring pin -7-.

Insert clamping bolt -4- with clamping plates -5- and washers.
Bolt clamping bolt -4- to operating lever -8- (left-hand thread).

Move operating lever -8- to upper stop (arrow) and tighten clamping bolt to 22 ... 24 Nm (left-hand thread).

Install slide rod -1- with locking plate -3-, if necessary loosen nut -4-. Upper or lower slots can be used.

Installing the locking plate -3- at an angle is permissible.

The installation position of the locking plate is determined by the position of the hexagon on tensioning bolt -4-.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
