Determining thickness of shim "S4" — VW
Determining thickness of shim "S4" on VW: 13 steps, 2 torque figures. What to remove, what to tighten and to how many Nm, what to check after.
Workshop procedure for VW — the exact step sequence and torque figures, straight from real workshop data.
🧭 Before you start
Fits: VW Sharan I / SEAT Alhambra (7M)
- Special tools named: dial gauge
Don't miss
- When pinion housing is secured, a shim S3 (e.g. 1.2 mm) must be added so that shaft bevel gear does not lie against final drive housing.
🔩 Torque settings
Values can differ between engine variants — check the code stamped on your block.
| Torque | Fastener / step |
|---|---|
| 50 Nm (37 lb-ft) | Tighten hexagon nut |
| 80 Nm (59 lb-ft) | Tighten hexagon nut for output flange |
ℹ️ Always cross-check the exact figure against your vehicle's factory manual before final tightening — a wrong torque can damage the engine. These values are extracted from workshop data and may not cover every variant or revision.
📋 Procedure
- Press outer race of outer tapered roller bearing for shaft bevel gear into pinion housing with press piece2050.
- Press outer race of inner tapered roller bearing for shaft bevel gear into pinion housing with press piece2050.
- Press inner race of inner tapered roller bearing onto shaft bevel gear.
- Fit shaft bevel gear.
- Lay thickest shim "S4" = 2.6 mm (allocate with Electronic parts catalogue on shaft bevel gear.
- Bolt pinion housing with a shim S3 to final drive housing. [Note: When pinion housing is secured, a shim S3 (e.g. 1.2 mm) must be added so that shaft bevel gear does not lie against final drive housing.]
- Fit inner race of outer tapered roller bearing and output flange and fit hexagon nut.
- Lock bevel box output shaft using support plate T10108/1.
- Tighten hexagon nut for output flange to 80 Nm torque. — 80 Nm (59 lb-ft)
- Press shaft bevel gear in direction of outer races for outer and inner tapered roller bearings while simultaneously turning eight times.
- Attach dial gauge and set to "„0“" with 1 mm preload.
- Move shaft bevel gear up and down.
- Read play from dial gauge and determine S4.

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
