Calibrating reversing camera R189 — VW

Calibrating reversing camera R189 on VW: 25 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.

Calibrating the rear view camera R189 on the VW Passat B8 saloon and estate (3G2 and 3G5). The calibration is required after the camera has been removed, replaced or knocked, and it is set up with the calibration unit and its lasers rather than adjusted mechanically. Wheel centre mountings with adapters to suit the wheel bolt pattern are fitted to the rear wheels – not on anti-theft bolts – and their paddles set just above the floor. The calibration unit is positioned behind the car and squared up using the spacing laser on each side until both distances match, with the line laser on the centre of the badge. The height of the unit and the distance from the camera lens to the ground are measured and entered during guided diagnosis. Accurate measurements are what make the result correct.

25 steps

🧭 Before you start

Connect the diagnostic tester, fit the wheel centre mountings and paddles to the rear wheels, and set up the calibration unit. Square it with the spacing laser on both sides and centre the line laser on the badge. Measure the unit height and the camera lens height, then run the camera calibration from the test plan in diagnosis mode.

Fits: VW Passat B8 (3G, 2014–)

Don't miss

  • Do not mount the wheel centre mountings on anti-theft wheel bolts.
  • Paddles must move freely just above the floor.
  • Adjust the calibration unit until both spacing laser readings are identical.
  • The line laser must hit the centre of the badge with the spirit level still centred.
  • Record both dimensions H and B accurately before starting the guided test.

📋 Procedure

  1. Make sure all necessary prerequisites are fulfilled .
  2. Connect vehicle diagnostic tester.
  3. Check the bolt hole circle pattern on the wheels.
  4. Prepare wheel centre mountingsVAS 6350/1 as required.
  5. To do so, secure three wheel bolt adapters to each wheel centre mountingVAS 6350/1 to match the hole circle.

  1. Position paddles on both wheel centre mountingsVAS 6350/1 and secure each paddle with clamping bolt.
  2. Fit wheel centre mountingsVAS 6350/1 onto wheel securing bolts on rear axle. [Note: When fitting the wheel centre mountingsVAS 6350/1 onto the wheels, make sure that the wheel centre mountingsVAS 6350/1 are not mounted on any "“anti-theft”" wheel bolts that might be installed.]
  3. Adjust paddles using clamping bolts so that they can move freely just above the floor. Make sure the paddles can move freely.
  4. Assemble and set up calibration unitVAS 6350.
  5. Switch on spacing laserVAS 6350/2.
  6. Hold spacing laserVAS 6350/2(2) flush with bracket on one side of the calibration unit as shown in illustration. Spacing laserVAS 6350/2(2) must make firm contact with bracket.
  7. Briefly press the measurement button.
  8. Hold spacing laserVAS 6350/2 in locating bracket on calibration unitVAS 6350 with one hand while laser beam is visible on paddle.
  9. Press measuring button briefly to measure distance.
  10. Make a note of the distance.
  11. Perform same measuring procedure for front wheel on other side of calibration unitVAS 6350.
  12. Adjust calibration unitVAS 6350 until values on both sides are identical.
  13. When adjusting, make sure that linear laserVAS 6350/3 hits centre of Volkswagen emblem and spirit level display also remains centred. If necessary, readjust accordingly.
  14. Measure height of calibration unitVAS 6350: dimension (H) (top edge of platform - floor).
  15. Note the reading for the height of the calibration unitVAS 6350. [Note: The vehicle shown in the illustration may differ from the actual vehicle.]
  16. Measure (dimension B) between the centre of the reversing camera lens and the wheel support surface using a commercially available folding ruler.
  17. Note the reading for dimension (B).
  18. Select Diagnosis mode, and start diagnosis.
  19. Select Test plan tab.
  20. Push Select own test button, and select the following menu items one after the other:

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
