Assembly overview: power assisted steering box (ZF) on VW: factory workshop procedure. Full factory text, tools and checks.
Workshop procedure for VW — the factory write-up, straight from real workshop data.
📋 Procedure
ℹ️ Torque figures below come verbatim from workshop data — always cross-check against your vehicle's factory manual before final tightening.
If complaints are received determine cause with the help of pressure tests, leakage test and fault finding programme, running gear No. 10. If a fault exists the power assisted steering box can be serviced.
Notes:
If reservoir fluid level is low then check steering system for leaks.
In the case of leaks at the pipe connections first tighten connections and wipe dry then recheck for leaks.
The steering box can be serviced if the pinion seal or the rack seals in steering box housing are leaking.
To check the rack seals loosen the hose clip on the bellows and push bellows to one side.
Renew self-locking nuts and bolts. Welding and straightening work on steering components is not permitted.
To grease the rack only use steering box grease Part No. AOF 063 000 04.

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
