Adjusting selector mechanism (rod selector mechanism) on VW: factory workshop procedure. Full factory text, tools and checks.
Workshop procedure for VW — the factory write-up, straight from real workshop data.
📋 Procedure
ℹ️ Torque figures below come verbatim from workshop data — always cross-check against your vehicle's factory manual before final tightening.
Gearbox in neutral.
Loosen clamp (arrow). The connection selector rod/angle finger must be free to move.
Note:
Move the selector rod to and fro several times in the angle finger to ensure that it moves easily.
Pull the gear stick cover off the centre console cover.
Then pull the centre console cover, vertically upwards (arrows).
Remove rubber cover, if fitted.
The eccentric adjuster on gear stick must be so aligned that the clamp -A- faces to reverse gear hook (arrow).
Select 5th gear with gear stick.
Turn screw -A- of gear stick jig 3384 out until the angled piece is still just in contact with main body (arrow).
The gear stick jig is then inserted as follows:
Guide in (direction of arrow) from the rear of the centre console below the reverse gear hook.
Then it is rotated into the recess in the guide for the reverse gear hook (direction of arrow).
Now tighten bolt -A- and push the gear stick jig down.
Move gear stick into neutral, press gear stick down and insert reverse gear hook in the recess -B- in the gear stick jig.
Then align selector rod and angle finger stress-free.
Note:
Please ensure that the gearbox is not in gear (neutral position).
Tighten clamp (arrow).
Remove gear stick jig.
Fit covers for centre console and gear stick.

Functional check
In neutral the gear stick must be in the 3rd/4th gear gate.
Operate clutch.
Select all gears several times. Pay particular attention to the operation of the reverse gear lock.
Should a gear fail to engage smoothly after repeated selection, then continue as follows:
Engage 1st gear.
Remove play from selector mechanism by carefully pushing gear stick to the left.
The distance between gear stick stop and gear stick housing must be1.0 mm to 2.0 mm (dimension -a-).
Should this not be the case, perform fine adjustment with 1st gear selected =>Page
34-22.
Note:
A prerequisite for correct gear linkage adjustment is that the operating and transfer elements of the selector mechanism are in good condition.
Gearbox, clutch and clutch release mechanism must also be in good condition.

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
