Adjusting height of sliding/tilting sunroof glass panel — VW
Adjusting height of sliding/tilting sunroof glass panel on VW: 11 steps, 9 torque figures. What to remove, what to tighten and to how many Nm, what to.
Setting the height of the tilt/slide glass panel is a fine adjustment job on the platform codes listed below, usually done when the panel sits proud of or below the roof skin and causes wind noise or a weeping seal. With the roof tilted and the sliding headliner pushed back, the lower and upper trims come off the panel so you can reach its Torx T25 securing screws. Those are slackened, the panel is cycled closed, open and closed again, and only then is the height set front and rear on each side before the screws are snugged up. Two things decide the result: following that close-open-close sequence exactly, and tightening in the order your version calls for so the panel does not creep while you torque it.
🧭 Before you start
Tilt the roof, push the headliner rearwards and unclip the lower trim at the rear and then the upper trim. Slacken the panel securing screws, cycle the glass closed, open and closed, then set the height at front and rear on both sides. Tighten the screws to 4.5 Nm, or 5 Nm on versions that use the front-first, then middle and rear sequence, and refit the trims with the lower one hooked in at the front first.
Fits: platform codes 6E1, 6X1
Don't miss
- Cycle the glass closed, open, closed before setting height; skipping the sequence gives a false adjustment.
- Torque is 4.5 Nm or 5 Nm depending on version; check which applies before tightening.
- Where a sequence is given, tighten front bolts first, then middle, then rear, on both sides.
- Hook the lower trim in at the front before clipping it, or it will not seat.
- Check flush fit against the roof skin along the full front and rear edge before refitting trims.

ℹ️ Always cross-check the exact figure against your vehicle's factory manual before final tightening — a wrong torque can damage the engine. These values are extracted from workshop data and may not cover every variant or revision.
📋 Procedure
- Tilt sunroof.
- Push sliding headliner to rear.
- Unclip lower trim (2) at rear towards centre of vehicle and unhook forwards (arrow).
- Unclip upper trim (1) towards centre of vehicle.
- Remove securing screws from glass panel (Torx T25; 4.5 Nm). — 4.5 Nm (3.3 lb-ft)
- Close glass panel, open panel and close again (adhere strictly to sequence to achieve a correct adjustment).
- Adjust height of glass panel at front and rear on both sides as follows:
- Tighten screws for glass panel (4.5 Nm). — 4.5 Nm (3.3 lb-ft)
- Tilt sunroof.
- First hook in front of lower trim (2)(arrow), then clip in place.
- Clip trim (1) in place on glass panel.

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
