Timing chain replacement: Saab 9-3 B204 2.0 (B204E, B204I, B204L, B204R, …)
Step-by-step timing chain replacement for the Saab 9-3 B204 2.0: 90 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.
On the Saab 9-3 MY98 with the B204 four-cylinder (B204E, I, L, R and S), the timing chain is renewed without stripping the front of the engine: the old chain is split, the new one is joined to it and drawn round the gears, then riveted closed with a chain separating tool. Access is through the engine cover, camshaft cover and spark plugs, with the chain tensioner removed and dismantled. The chain housing is covered with a clean cloth so no pins or links fall in, and the chain is tied to the cylinder head while it is open. Success rests on aligning the timing marks before splitting and connecting the new chain ends properly.
🧭 Before you start
Remove the engine cover, spark plugs and camshaft cover, align the timing marks and dismantle the tensioner. Cover the chain housing, separate the old chain, connect the new chain to it and turn the engine clockwise to draw it through, keeping it tied to the head. Join the new chain ends with the special tool, refit the tensioner with sealant, turn the crankshaft two turns and check the camshaft and crankshaft marks. Refit the camshaft cover, tightening the bolts in the order shown.
Fits: platform codes 2.0, SE, TURBO, 16V, |, T, 2.0I, ECOPOWER

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
