Timing chain replacement: Opel Agila B 1.2 (K12B)

Step-by-step timing chain replacement for the Opel Agila B 1.2 (K12B): 141 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.

This covers the timing chain on the Agila B 1.2 16V with the K12B engine. The oil sump and strainer come off as well as the front exhaust pipe, and the gearbox is held on a transmission jack while the engine mounting bracket is removed. The ancillary belt and its tensioner bracket, the coolant pump pulley and the crankshaft pulley (counterheld with the special tool) are removed before the timing cover. On this engine the exhaust camshaft gearwheel is renewed along with the chain tensioner. The new chain goes on together with the crankshaft gearwheel; the crankshaft is turned clockwise 2 turns and the timing rechecked before the cover is sealed.

🧭 Before you start

Drain the oil and remove the sump, strainer, front exhaust pipe, pulleys and engine mounting bracket with the gearbox supported. Take off the cover, tensioner, guide rail and exhaust camshaft gearwheel, then fit the new chain with the crankshaft gearwheel. Fit a new tensioner and camshaft gearwheel, check the timing after 2 turns, renew the front oil seal, seal and refit the covers, and set the ancillary belt deflection.

Fits: platform codes 1.2, 16V

  • Opens: engine oil
  • Renewed: camshaft gearwheel note

Don't miss

  • Renew the camshaft gearwheel and the chain tensioner as part of this job.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
