Timing chain replacement: Ford Mondeo 1.8, 2.0 (CGBA, CGBB, CHBA, CHBB, …)

Step-by-step timing chain replacement for the Ford Mondeo 1.8, 2.0: 32 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.

Although filed under the timing chain, this procedure on the Mondeo with the 1.8 or 2.0 Duratec-HE 16V engine goes as far as lifting the cylinder head. Before anything, note the audio security code and drain the coolant. The intake side is stripped: throttle cable and throttle body connections, connectors, dipstick tube, EGR hose and the inlet manifold. On the exhaust side the front pipe, manifold heat shield and bracket come off, with the alternator bolt and earth cable removed. The timing chain and guides are then taken off, the camshafts removed, the fuel feed line disconnected and the head bolts undone. Head bolt tightening on refit follows the specified torque data, and the camshafts go back before the chain.

32 steps 6 engine codes

🧭 Before you start

Check the audio code, disconnect the battery and drain the cooling system. Remove the throttle connections, dipstick tube, EGR hose and inlet manifold, then disconnect the exhaust front pipe and remove its heat shield and bracket. Remove the alternator bolt, earth cable, timing chain, guides and camshafts, disconnect the fuel feed and remove the head bolts and cylinder head. Rebuild in reverse, fitting the camshafts and tightening the head to the torque settings.

Fits: platform codes 1.8, DURATEC-HE, 16V, |, 2.0

  • Opens: coolant

Don't miss

  • Check the audio system security code before disconnecting the battery.
  • Drain the cooling system before removing hoses.
  • Tighten the cylinder head bolts to the specified torque settings and sequence.
  • Use new cylinder head bolts and gasket if specified; that is general workshop practice.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
