Timing belt replacement: Citroen Xantia non turbo 1.9 HDi (XUD9A, XUD9Y)

Step-by-step timing belt replacement for the Citroen Xantia non turbo 1.9 HDi (XUD9A/XUD9Y): 62 steps.

This timing belt change applies to the Citroën Xantia 1.9 D with the non-turbo XUD9 diesel (XUD9A/D9B and XUD9Y/DJZ). The belt drives both the camshaft and the injection pump, so three locking points are used: the camshaft gearwheel, the injection pump gearwheel and a TDC pin through the flywheel. Access comes from the right-hand side: the inner wing splash guard comes off, the engine is supported and its mounting removed, the wiring loom moved aside, the crankshaft pulley taken off with the flywheel locked, and the upper, middle and lower covers removed. The tensioner body is then loosened, its pulley pushed back and locked off and the old belt removed. The new belt goes on in the set installation sequence before the tensioner is released onto it.

62 steps 2 engine codes

🧭 Before you start

Remove the splash guard, support the engine and take off the engine support, move the wiring loom and remove the timing covers and crankshaft pulley. Pin the crankshaft at TDC and lock the camshaft and injection pump gearwheels. Loosen the tensioner, push the pulley away and remove the belt. Fit the new belt in sequence, let the tensioner take up, tighten the tensioner body, remove all locking tools, then refit in reverse order.

Fits: platform codes 1.9, D

  • Timing position: the crankshaft or camshaft is set and locked during this job
  • Special tools named: locking pin, locking tool

Don't miss

  • Lock the camshaft and injection pump gearwheels as well as the crankshaft before removing the belt.
  • Follow the installation sequence when routing the belt so the slack ends up on the tensioner side.
  • Remove every locking tool before turning the engine.
  • Use the flywheel locking tool to hold the engine while undoing and refitting the crankshaft pulley.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
