Testing solenoid valves for camshaft adjustment (-N205 and -N208) — AUDI
Testing solenoid valves for camshaft adjustment (-N205 and -N208) on Audi: factory workshop procedure for engines AGA, AJG, AJP, ALF.
Workshop procedure for AUDI — the factory write-up, straight from real workshop data.
📋 Procedure
AJG ALF
Switch ignition on.
Start final control diagnosis and select camshaft timing control

.
Final control diagnosis
⇒
Camshaft timing control 1
Indicated on display:
When the camshaft timing control is activated, both solenoid valves should click audibly.
If this result is not obtained, carry out the following tests:
Electrical test of solenoid valves for camshaft adjustment
Unplug connector from the camshaft adjustment solenoid valve which is to be tested.
Measure resistance between the valve contacts using hand-held multimeter V.A.G 1526.
Specification: 10 ... 18ω
If the reading does not match the specification:
Renew the relevant camshaft adjustment valve.
Testing voltage supply to camshaft adjustment valves
Unplug connector from the valve which is to be tested.
Connect diode test lamp V.A.G 1527 between engine earth and contact 1 (positive) of the connector using test leads from auxiliary cable set V.A.G 1594.
Operate the starter for a few seconds. The engine can be allowed to start.
The diode test lamp should light up.
If the diode test lamp does not light up, carry out the following tests:
Test fuse for camshaft adjustment valves.
Test for open circuit in wiring between fuse and contact 1 on connectors for camshaft adjustment valves using current flow diagram.

Testing activation of camshaft adjustment valves
Unplug connector from the valve which is to be tested.
Connect diode test lamp V.A.G 1527 between contacts 1 (positive) and 2 of the valve connector using test leads from auxiliary cable set V.A.G 1594.

⇒
Camshaft timing control 1
Indicated on display:
When the camshaft timing control is activated the diode test lamp should start flashing.
If the diode test lamp does not flash or lights up continuously:
Connect test box V.A.G 1598/22 to wiring harness for engine control unit =>Page
24-21
.
If the diode test lamp lights up continuously:
Test for short to earth in wiring from contact 2 on connector for camshaft adjustment valve.
If the diode test lamp does not flash:
Test for open circuit or short to positive in wiring between contact 2 on connector for camshaft adjustment valve and socket 55 on test box.
Resistance in wiring: max. 1.5ω
Rectify any open circuits or short circuits.
If no open circuits or short circuits are found, fit a new engine control unit => Page
24-23
.
If no faults have been found in any of the tests so far, renew the relevant mechanical camshaft adjuster.

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
