Testing solenoid valves for camshaft adjustment -N205. — AUDI
Testing solenoid valves for camshaft adjustment -N205. on Audi: factory workshop procedure for engines APT, AQE, ARG, ARH.
Workshop procedure for AUDI — the factory write-up, straight from real workshop data.
📋 Procedure
ARH
Switch ignition on.
Perform final control diagnosis and activate camshaft timing control => Page
01-35
.
Final control diagnosis
⇒
Camshaft timing control 1
Indicated on display:
When the camshaft timing control is activated, the solenoid valve should click audibly.
If this result is not obtained, carry out the following tests:
Electrical test of solenoid valve for camshaft adjustment
Unplug connector from solenoid valve for camshaft adjustment.
Measure resistance between the valve contacts using hand-held multimeter V.A.G 1526.
Specification: 10 ... 18 ω
If the reading does not match the specification:
Renew solenoid valve for camshaft adjustment.
Testing voltage supply to camshaft adjustment valve
Unplug connector from solenoid valve.
Connect diode test lamp V.A.G 1527 between engine earth and socket 1 (positive) of the connector using test leads from auxiliary test set V.A.G 1594.
Operate the starter for a few seconds. The engine can be allowed to start.
The diode test lamp should light up.
If the diode test lamp does not light up, carry out the following tests:
Test fuse for camshaft adjustment valve.
=> Current flow diagrams, Electrical fault finding and Fitting locations binder
If the fuse is okay:
Test for continuity in wiring from socket 1 on connector for camshaft adjustment valve via fuse to fuel pump relay
=> Current flow diagrams, Electrical fault finding and Fitting locations binder
Testing activation of camshaft adjustment valve
Unplug connector from solenoid valve.
Connect diode test lamp V.A.G 1527 between sockets 1 (positive) and 2 of the valve connector using test leads from auxiliary cable set V.A.G 1594.
Perform final control diagnosis and activate camshaft timing control => Page

Final control diagnosis
⇒
Camshaft timing control 1
Indicated on display:
When the camshaft timing control is activated the diode test lamp should start flashing.
If the diode test lamp does not flash or lights up continuously:
Connect test box V.A.G 1598/31 to wiring harness for engine control unit. Do not connect to the engine control unit itself.
=> Page
24-10
.
If the diode test lamp lights up continuously:
Test for short to earth in wiring from socket 2 on connector for camshaft adjustment valve.
If the diode test lamp does not flash:
Test for continuity or short to positive in wiring between socket 2 on connector for camshaft adjustment valve and socket 115 on test box.
Resistance in wiring: max. 1.5 ω
=> Current flow diagrams, Electrical fault finding and Fitting locations binder
Rectify any open circuits or short circuits.
If no open circuits or short circuits are found, fit a new engine control unit => Page
24-12
.
If no faults have been found in any of the tests so far, renew the mechanical camshaft adjuster.

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
