Renewing brake caliper (1KX): Audi A1

Step-by-step renewing brake caliper (1KX) for the Audi A1: 29 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.

Workshop procedure for AUDI — the exact step sequence and torque figures, straight from real workshop data.

29 steps

🧭 Before you start

Fits: Audi A1 (8X, 2010–2018)

  • Opens: brake fluid
  • Renewed: bolts for brake caliper, seals

Don't miss

  • This closes the valves in the brake master cylinder and stops the brake fluid reservoir from running empty.
  • The brake pedal actuatorV.A.G 1869/2 must not be removed.
  • Place a cloth under the connection to catch escaping brake fluid.
  • Counterhold guide pins (1 and 2) and remove bolts (arrows).
  • Renew bolts for brake caliper.Renew seals.New brake calipers are filled with brake fluid and are pre-bled.

📋 Procedure

  1. Release parking brake.
  2. Remove relevant rear wheel Running gear, axles, steering44Wheels, tyres.
  3. Insert brake pedal actuatorV.A.G 1869/2 between brake pedal and driver's seat. Depress brake pedal at least 60 mm. [Note: This closes the valves in the brake master cylinder and stops the brake fluid reservoir from running empty.]
  4. Detach protective cap (3) from bleeder screw (1).
  5. Fit bleeder hose (2) of reservoir onto bleeder screw.

  1. Open bleeder screw to relieve pressure in hydraulic system.
  2. Close bleeder screw and remove reservoir. [Note: The brake pedal actuatorV.A.G 1869/2 must not be removed.]
  3. Press lever on brake caliper (2) in direction of (arrow).
  4. Disengage brake cable (1) from lever on brake caliper (2).
  5. Compress retaining tabs (3).
  6. Disengage brake cable (1) from retainer (4) on brake caliper. [Note: Place a cloth under the connection to catch escaping brake fluid.]
  7. ⚠ Risk of skin irritation.Always wear chemical-resistant protective gloves to prevent brake fluid from contacting skin.Accident risk: if the water content in the brake fluid is too high, this can cause vapour bubbles in the fluid.Brake fluid is hygroscopic, i.e. it absorbs moisture from the surrounding air.Seal open brake hoses and brake lines using sealing plugs from repair kit1H0 698 311 A.Risk of malfunction if brake fluid comes into contact with fluids containing mineral oils.Do not under any circumstances allow brake fluid to come into contact with fluids that contain mineral oils (e.g. oil, petrol, cleaning agents). Protective gloves must be free of oil and grease.Risk of damage to paintwork surfacesDue to its corrosive effect, brake fluid must not be allowed to come into contact with paintwork. Rinse off brake fluid spillages immediately using plenty of water. — Disconnect brake hose (arrow).
  8. Seal open connections immediately using clean sealing plugs from repair kit1H0 698 311 A.
  9. Disconnect brake line from brake hose and brake caliper.
  10. Counterhold guide pins (1 and 2) and remove bolts (arrows).
  11. Detach brake caliper.
  12. Remove brake pads. [Note: Renew bolts for brake caliper.Renew seals.New brake calipers are filled with brake fluid and are pre-bled.]
  13. Clean pad contact surfaces (2) on brake carrier (1) and apply a small amount of lithium grease Electronic parts catalogue.
  14. Fit brake pads in brake carrier.
  15. Slide brake caliper over fitted brake pads.
  16. Counterhold guide pins (1 and 2) and tighten new bolts (arrows) for brake caliper.
  17. Secure brake hose connection (arrow). [Note: Make sure the brake hose is routed correctly. The brake hose must not be kinked, crushed or twisted or chafe against parts of the vehicle at any point.]
  18. Run brake cable (1) through retainer (4) on brake caliper until retaining tabs (3) engage.
  19. Press lever on brake caliper (2) in direction of (arrow).
  20. Engage brake cable (1) in lever on brake caliper (2).
  21. Remove brake pedal actuatorV.A.G 1869/2.
  22. Bleed brake system (only at wheel where caliper was detached and brake line disconnected) . [Note: You should only bleed the brakes at the wheel where the caliper was detached and the brake line disconnected. If the brake pedal then still feels "“soft”", bleed the complete brake system .]
  23. Fit rear wheels Running gear, axles, steering44Wheels, tyres.
  24. Adjust parking brake .

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
