Removing and renewing camshafts or camshaft bearings - cylinder bank 2 (left-side) — AUDI
Removing and renewing camshafts or camshaft bearings - cylinder bank 2 (left-side) on Audi: 21 steps, engines CDTA, CDTB, CDTC, CDUC.
Renewing the camshafts or their bearings on cylinder bank 2 (left side) of the V6 engines listed (CDTA, CDUC, CJGA, CKVB, CPNB, CTBA and others) in the Audi A5 2007–2016 (8T), A5 Cabriolet (8F) and A4 B8 2007–2015 (8K) starts with the timing chain off the inlet camshaft. The TDC position is checked, and camshaft fitting tool T40096 is clamped across the split inlet gear so the two halves stay aligned. The bearing cap bolts are loosened from 12 back to 1 and the caps and camshafts lifted away. Reassembly is where the care goes: bearing pedestals I to IV are fitted and checked, the camshafts set in at TDC, the caps held straight with cable ties, and locating pin T40311/1 and gauge T40311 used while the caps are tightened.
🧭 Before you start
Remove the inlet camshaft chain, check TDC, clamp the gear halves with T40096 and slacken the bearing cap bolts in sequence 12 to 1 before lifting out caps and camshafts. Fit the bearing pedestals, insert the camshafts at TDC, fit the matching caps, tie each with cable ties, fit gauge T40311 on its locating pin and tighten the cap bolts. Recheck TDC, remove T40096 and refit the timing chains.
Fits: Audi A5 (8T, 2007–2016), Audi A5 Cabriolet (8F), Audi A4 B8 (8K, 2007–2015)
- Timing position: the crankshaft or camshaft is set and locked during this job
- Special tools named: T40311/1, T40311
Don't miss
- Clamp the split inlet gear with T40096 so the tooth faces align before removal and refit.
- Loosen the bearing cap bolts in the sequence 12 to 1.
- Do not damage roller rocker fingers or hydraulic compensation elements when lifting camshafts.
- Use cable ties and gauge T40311 to keep bearings straight while tightening.
- Check the TDC position again before removing T40096.

📋 Procedure
- Remove timing chain from inlet camshaft .
- Check "“TDC”" position of camshafts:
- Place camshaft fitting tool T40096 on teeth of inlet camshaft so that the two arms of the tool engage on the two halves of the gear (one in each half, as shown in illustration).
- Tighten the clamping tool using the knurled wheel so that the faces of the gear teeth are in alignment.
- Loosen bearing cap bolts in the sequence (12 ... 1). [Note: Make sure you do not damage the roller rocker fingers and hydraulic compensation elements when removing the camshafts.]
- Carefully detach bearing caps and camshafts.
- Fit camshaft bearing pedestals "“I, II and III”" on cylinder head.
- Fit camshaft bearing pedestal "“IV”" on cylinder head.
- Check that bearing pedestals are positioned correctly:
- Insert camshafts in bearing pedestals in "“TDC”" position.
- Fit matching bearing caps on bearing pedestals.
- Wrap one cable tie (arrows) on each side around bearing pedestal and bearing cap and secure. [Note: The cable ties help to keep the camshafts and camshaft bearings straight when they are tightened.]
- Fit bolts (1 … 12) in bearing caps.
- Screw locating pin T40311/1 into threaded hole (1) in line with cylinder 5, as shown in illustration.
- Fit gauge T40311 onto support brackets (arrows) for clamping pieces, as shown in illustration.
- Tighten bearing cap bolts .
- Check "“TDC”" position of camshafts:
- Remove camshaft fitting tool T40096.
- Install camshaft timing chains .

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
