Removing and installing power steering pump (vehicles with V6 TDI engine) — AUDI
Removing and installing power steering pump (vehicles with V6 TDI engine) on Audi: 36 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.
Changing the power steering pump on the Q7 (4L, 2005–2015) with the V6 TDI is done from above after the fluid has been extracted from the reservoir with an extraction unit. Vehicles with air suspension go on the lifting platform first. The engine cover and air intake hose come off, the air pipe is moved aside if fitted, the running direction of the poly V-belt is marked and the belt is slipped off the pump pulley. The pulley bolts are loosened while held with pin wrench 3212, the suction hose clamped and disconnected, the pressure line released, and the pump unbolted. Priming the new pump with fluid before fitting, renewing seals and bleeding the system afterwards decide whether it lasts.
🧭 Before you start
Extract fluid from the reservoir, remove the engine cover and intake hose and slacken the poly V-belt off the pump pulley. Unbolt the pulley, clamp and disconnect the suction hose, release the pressure line and remove the pump. Prime the new pump by hand, fit it with the front bolts tightened before the rear, then reconnect the lines with new seals. Refit the belt running straight, fill, bleed and leak-check the system.
Fits: Audi Q7 (4L, 2005–2015)
- Opens: power steering fluid
- Renewed: seals, seal or o-ring
Don't miss
- Mark the poly V-belt running direction before removal and check it runs straight on refit.
- Prime the new pump: fill at the inlet and turn by hand until fluid leaves the outlet.
- Do not reuse drained hydraulic fluid; renew all seals and O-rings.
- Align suction hose markings (1) and (2); insert the pressure line until lug (3) contacts the housing.
- Tighten the front pump bolts first, then the rear.
- Bleed the steering system and check for leaks after filling.

📋 Procedure
- Install suction hose (arrow A) so that markings (1) and (2) are in line.
- Install pressure line (arrow B) so that locating lug (3) contacts pump housing (4). [Note: Renew seals.Do not re-use hydraulic fluid which has been drained off.Use only hydraulic fluid.] [Note: Fully insert pressure line when installing.]
- Vehicles with air suspension: put vehicle on lifting platform .
- Extract hydraulic fluid from reservoir using used oil collection and extraction unitV.A.G 1782.
- Carefully pull engine cover panel off 4 retaining pins (arrows).
- Remove air intake hose (arrows).
- If fitted, detach air pipe (4) at centre and pivot upwards slightly. To do so, remove bolts (1) and (2) and loosen bolt (3)21. [Note: Take care not to damage any components when moving air pipe (4).]
- Mark running direction of poly V-belt.
- Slacken off poly V-belt and detach belt only from power steering pump pulley 13.
- Unscrew bolts (arrows). When doing this, counterhold pulley with pin wrench3212.
- Place several cloths under power steering pump and hydraulic lines.
- Clamp off suction hose with hose clamp up to 25 mm ∅3094 and disconnect suction hose from power steering pump.
- Remove banjo bolt (1).
- Remove bolts (1).
- Remove bolt (2) and take off power steering pump (3).
- Place several cloths under power steering pump and hydraulic lines.
- Clamp off suction hose with hose clamp up to 25 mm ∅3094 and disconnect suction hose from power steering pump.
- Remove bolts (1) and pull pressure line out of power steering pump.
- Remove bolts (1).
- Remove bolt (2) and take off power steering pump (3). [Note: Clean off fluid in engine compartment where necessary.Renew seals. Before fitting a new pump, put in hydraulic fluid at the inlet and turn pump by hand until fluid flows out at the pressure outlet.Hose connections and hoses for charge air system must be free of oil and grease before fitting.Secure all hose connections with the correct type of hose clips (same as original equipment) Electronic parts catalogue.]
- Turn hub by hand until fluid comes out at pump outlet.
- To make it easier to fit power steering pump, knock back threaded bush for rear bolt in bracket slightly.
- Install power steering pump.
- Tighten front bolts first.
- Then tighten rear bolts.
- Secure pulley to power steering pump.
- Secure suction hose. When doing so, note correct position of suction hose on power steering pump.
- Use new seal or O-ring .
- Tighten connection for pressure line.
- Clean off fluid in engine compartment where necessary.
- Install poly-V-belt and make sure that belt runs straight 13.
- Fill up with hydraulic fluid.
- Check hydraulic fluid level .
- Bleed steering system .
- Check steering system for leaks .
- Vehicles with air suspension: set down vehicle on its wheels . [Note: Ensure that the belt is properly seated in the pulleys when installing.]

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
