Removing and installing overheating fuse S24 / overheating sensor G189 and temperature sensor G18 on Audi: factory workshop procedure.
Workshop procedure for AUDI — the factory write-up, straight from real workshop data.
📋 Procedure
Removing and installing
overheating fuse
S24
/
overheating sensor
G189
and
temperature sensor
G18
Note
Depending on version of
auxiliary heater control unit
J364
,
overheating fuse
S24
may also be referred to as
overheating sensor
G189
.
The
overheating fuse
S24
/
overheating sensor
G189
Item C
, the
temperature sensor
G18
Item D
and the corresponding wiring form one unit and can only be jointly replaced.
The
overheating fuse
S24
/
overheating sensor
G189
and the
temperature sensor
G18
are only inserted in the housing. After a lengthy operating period, O-rings fitted as seals may however stick to housing.
As of Model Year 2006, auxiliary heaters with an improved
overheating fuse
S24
/
overheating sensor
G189
and an improved
temperature sensor
G18
are gradually being introduced (better protection of wiring against ingress of moisture).
Removing
Remove auxiliary heater
Chapter
. (all models except Audi S6),
Chapter
(Audi S6)
Detach the add-on components from the auxiliary heater
Chapter
(all models except Audi S6),
Chapter
(Audi S6).
Detach both coolant hose connections from auxiliary heater
Chapter
.
Detach both plastic covers from auxiliary heater
Chapter
(dismantling and assembling auxiliary heater).
Remove bolt
A
and detach clip
B
.
Carefully pull the
overheating fuse
S24
/
overheating sensor
G189
Item C
and the
temperature sensor
G18
Item D
out of the auxiliary heater (e.g. by applying gripping pliers directly to the housing). In doing so, take care not to damage components which are to be re-used.
Unplug connector
F
from control unit.
Installing
Check and clean both openings in the outer casing of the auxiliary heater into which the
temperature sensor
G18
D
and the
overheating fuse
S24
/
overheating sensor
G189
C
are inserted. Also check the surfaces of these components that will come into contact with the heat exchanger. (through the two openings in the auxiliary heater).
Attach one new O-ring
E
each to the
overheating fuse
S24
/
overheating sensor
G189
and the
temperature sensor
G18
.
Prior to installation, moisten both O-rings
E
with coolant, for example (as lubricant).
Insert the
overheating fuse
S24
/
overheating sensor
G189
and the
temperature sensor
G18
.
Insert clip
B
in correct position and tighten bolt
A
.
Route wiring to connector
F
as shown and plug in connector.
Note
As of Model Year 2006, auxiliary heaters are gradually being introduced on which the wiring is routed on the opposite side to that shown at the attachment point for the holder of the connection.
Re-assemble the auxiliary heater
Chapter
(all models except Audi S6),
Chapter
(Audi S6).
Re-install the auxiliary heater and all the parts removed in reverse order
Chapter
(all models except Audi S6),
Chapter
(Audi S6).

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
