  • Special tools named: puller

Don't miss

  • When removing and installing drive shafts, do not allow them to hang free or stop against joints due to over bending. — Removing drive shaft
  • Note installation position of dished spring and spacer ring on outer joint.
  • Make sure that deflector ring (1) is clipped completely onto outer joint.Deflector ring (1) must align with contact surface of outer joint (arrow).
  • Apply clamp tensionerV.A.G 1682 as shown in illustration. Ensure edges of tool lie in corners of ear (B) on clip.

🔩 Torque settings

Values can differ between engine variants — check the code stamped on your block.

ℹ️ Always cross-check the exact figure against your vehicle's factory manual before final tightening — a wrong torque can damage the engine. These values are extracted from workshop data and may not cover every variant or revision.

📋 Procedure

  1. ⚠ When removing and installing drive shafts, do not allow them to hang free or stop against joints due to over bending. — Removing drive shaft
  2. Clamp drive shaft in vice using protective jaw covers.
  3. Open clamps on joint boot.
  4. Push back joint boot.
  5. Remove remains of grease using a clean cloth.

  1. Set puller T10382 up so that smooth side of puller plate T10382/1 points to spindle T10382/2.
  2. Assemble puller T10382 complete with multi-purpose toolVW 771.
  3. Pull constant velocity joint from drive shaft with multi-purpose toolVW 771 and multi-purpose toolVW 771.
  4. If necessary, press new joint boot onto drive shaft . [Note: Note installation position of dished spring and spacer ring on outer joint.]
  5. Install new retaining ring.
  6. Apply 60 g of constant velocity joint greaseG 052 738 A2 to outer constant velocity joint through ball tracks.
  7. Fill 60 g of constant velocity joint greaseG 052 738 A2 into joint boot.
  8. Drive clean and greased constant velocity joint onto shaft using plastic head hammer until circlip engages. [Note: Make sure that deflector ring (1) is clipped completely onto outer joint.Deflector ring (1) must align with contact surface of outer joint (arrow).]
  9. Apply clamp tensionerV.A.G 1682 as shown in illustration. Ensure edges of tool lie in corners of ear (B) on clip.
  10. Tighten clip by turning spindle (A) with the torque wrenchV.A.G 1331. Specified torque: 25 Nm. [Note: Due to the hard material of the joint boot and, consequently, to the use of a stainless steel clamp, it is possible to tension the clamps only with clamp tensionerV.A.G 1682.Make sure that thread of spindle (A) of clamp tensionerV.A.G 1682 moves easily. If necessary, lubricate the thread with MOS 2 grease. If the thread is tight (e.g. due to dirt), the required clamping force for the clip will not be attained although the correct torque is applied. The clamp tensionerV.A.G 1682 must not be twisted or canted as it is tightened.] — 25 Nm (18 lb-ft)
  11. Insert lug (1) of clamp into guide (arrow).
  12. Compress clamp with pliers, e.g. locking pliers for Phaeton steering rackVAS 6199 until upper part (1) locks with guide (arrow).
  13. Apply clamp tensionerV.A.G 1682 as shown in illustration. Ensure edges of tool lie in corners of ear (B) on clip.
  14. Tighten clip by turning spindle (A) with a torque wrenchV.A.G 1331(C). Specified torque: 25 Nm. Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
