📋 Procedure
Checking and cleaning plenum chamber water drain
Note
Drainage of water out of plenum chamber may be impaired by deposits such as leaves and pine needles accumulating in the water drains. If the vehicle is then driven through a car wash or in the event of heavy rainfall, the water level in the plenum chamber will rise and water will ingress into the fresh air intake housing via the water drain valve
arrow
installed in the housing and will be drawn in by the fresh air blower together with the air conveyed and blown onto the evaporator.
Depending on the type of vehicle, the two water drain grommet
A
in the plenum chamber can be cleaned from above (only with plenum chamber cover removed) or from below (with left or right wheel housing liner removed).
Remove the plenum chamber cover to clean the plenum chamber. The two water drain grommets
B
can be cleaned, e.g. when the vehicle is raised, from underneath via the two wheel housings with the wheel housing liner removed.
If the water drain grommets
B
are clogged with leaves and pine needles, the drains may freeze up in winter and prevent water drainage. After a short journey, the heat emitted by the engine and exhaust system melts the ice in the drains again. By the time the vehicle arrives at the workshop, the water may have already drained out of the plenum chamber.
The water drain grommets
B
are installed from above in the drain openings in the body
A
. With the wheel housing liner removed, the water drain grommets can also be removed and installed from underneath.

Note
Use a commercially available illuminated endoscope or similar to check inaccessible water drains. A version with a flexible, waterproof swan neck is most practical.
Depending on the version of the vehicle, it may also be necessary to unfasten the engine control unit from the bracket and placing it to one side before you can clean the water drains (right-side)

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
