Removing and installing heater and air conditioning unit — AUDI
Removing and installing heater and air conditioning unit on Audi: 93 steps, 1 torque figure. What to remove, what to tighten and to how many Nm, what to.
Workshop procedure for AUDI — the exact step sequence and torque figures, straight from real workshop data.
🧭 Before you start
Fits: Audi A5 (8T, 2007–2016), Audi Q5 (8R, 2008–2017), Audi A5 Cabriolet (8F), Audi A4 B8 (8K, 2007–2015); platform code 83
- Opens: coolant, refrigerant (A/C)
- Special tools named: VAS 5051
- Renewed: any damaged components
Don't miss
- Use e.g. clean sealing plugs (B) (size 20) from engine bung setVAS 6122 for covering connections at JX1(A)
- The heat exchanger is designed for a certain coolant flow direction. Therefore it is important to connect the coolant hoses correctly.Bleed coolant circuit 19Cooling system/coolant; Draining and filling cooling system.
- In order not to damage the dash panel fascia, only place the dash panel on a clean workbench, covered e.g. with clean cardboard.
- The air duct to the left dash panel vent (A) is attached with a fastener or a bolt (B) to the dash panel cross member (C). This fastener or bolt can only be removed after taking out the dash panel fascia.
- With the exception of the fuse box (left-side), it is not necessary to unfasten any other relay and control unit brackets (left-side) from the dash panel cross member.
🔩 Torque settings
Values can differ between engine variants — check the code stamped on your block.
| Torque | Fastener / step |
|---|---|
| 20 Nm (15 lb-ft) | Fit the hexagon nut (A) at the connection point of the refrigerant lines |
ℹ️ Always cross-check the exact figure against your vehicle's factory manual before final tightening — a wrong torque can damage the engine. These values are extracted from workshop data and may not cover every variant or revision.
📋 Procedure
- Move driver's and front passenger's seat as far to the rear as possible.
- Switch off ignition.
- Discharge refrigerant circuit Air conditioner with refrigerant R134a87Refrigerant circuit (Air conditioner with refrigerant R134a; Refrigerant circuit; Working with the air conditioner service station). [Note: Depending on the position of the service connection at the refrigerant line and the vehicle version, it may be necessary to remove the additional reinforcement for the body brace (left-side) to make it possible to connect the service coupling of the air conditioner service station (e.g. on the Audi Q5) Running gear, axles, steering40Suspension strut, upper links; Exploded view - suspension strut, upper links and Air conditioner with refrigerant R134a87Refrigerant circuit (Air conditioner with refrigerant R134a; Refrigerant circuit; Working with the air conditioner service station).]
- ⚠ Risk of fatal injury if high-voltage components are damaged.Observe the following when working in the vicinity of high-voltage components or wiring:It is not permitted to use cutting or forming tools, other sharp-edged tools or heat sources such as welding, brazing, soldering, hot air or thermal bonding equipment. Before starting work, visually inspect the high-voltage components in the areas involved. Before working in the engine compartment, visually inspect the power and control electronics for electric driveJX1, electric drive motor V141, air conditioner compressor V470 and high-voltage wiring. Before working on the vehicle underbody, visually inspect the high-voltage wiring and covers. Before working on the rear section of the vehicle, visually inspect the high-voltage wiring and the electro-box with the maintenance connector for high-voltage system TW . Visually inspect all potential equalisation lines.Check the following when making the visual inspection:There must be no external damage on any component. The insulation of the high-voltage wiring and potential equalisation lines must not be damaged. There must be no unusual deformation of the high-voltage wiring. All high-voltage components must be identified by a red warning sticker. — De-energise high-voltage system Electrical system93De-energising high-voltage system. - ⚠ High voltage can cause fatal injury.Danger of severe or fatal injuries from electric shock. The high-voltage system may only be de-energised by a suitably qualified person (Audi high-voltage technician). It must be definitely confirmed that the high-voltage system is de-energised. The system may only be de-energised using the vehicle diagnostic tester via "“Guided Fault Finding”". The qualified person (Audi high-voltage technician) confirms that the system is de-energised and uses the locking cap T40262 to ensure that the system cannot be re-energised. The ignition key and the maintenance connector for high-voltage system TW should then be stored in a safe place by the qualified person. The qualified person (Audi high-voltage technician) marks the vehicle by attaching the appropriate warning signs. — Remove rubber seal (A) and plenum chamber cover (B) (different versions) General body repairs, exterior50Bulkhead; Removing and installing plenum chamber cover.

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
Seen a figure that does not match your manual? Write to us — we correct it and note when. support@torqfix.com
