Removing and installing front brake caliper pistons: Audi A8 D4
Step-by-step removing and installing front brake caliper pistons for the Audi A8 D4: 8 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.
Overhauling the front caliper pistons on the Audi A8 D4 is a bench job once the caliper is off the car. The pistons are blown out of the housing one at a time with compressed air, and each seal is removed with a removal wedge. Cleaning is restricted: piston and seal are wiped only with methylated spirits and left to dry, since solvent or brake cleaner residue can attack the rubber. Both get a thin coat of the specified lithium grease, the seal goes into its groove in the housing, the protective cap is fitted to the piston, and the piston is pushed home with even pressure so it does not tip and bind. With a multi-piston caliper, take care not to shoot out one piston while working on the next.
🧭 Before you start
Remove the brake caliper and force the pistons out one at a time with compressed air. Remove the seals with the wedge, clean piston and seal with methylated spirits only and let them dry. Grease both lightly, fit the seal, put the protective cap on the piston and push it in with even pressure.
Fits: Audi A8 D4 (4H, 2010–2017)
Don't miss
- Expel pistons one at a time; keep fingers clear of the piston being blown out.
- Clean only with methylated spirits and allow the parts to dry before assembly.
- Use the specified lithium grease in a thin coat on piston and seal.
- Push the piston in with even pressure so it does not tilt and damage the seal.
- Bleed the brakes after refitting the caliper, as general practice.

📋 Procedure
- Remove brake caliper .
- Force pistons out of brake caliper housing one at a time using compressed air.
- Remove seal using removal wedge3409.
- The surface of the piston and seal should be cleaned using only methylated spirits and then dried.
- Apply a thin coat of lithium greaseG 052 150 A2 to piston and seal before inserting.
- Insert the seal into the brake caliper housing.
- Fit protective cap onto piston.
- Push piston into caliper housing, exerting even pressure.

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
