Removing and installing exhaust gas recirculation cooler (right-side) — AUDI
Removing and installing exhaust gas recirculation cooler (right-side) on Audi: 15 steps, engines ASE.
The right-hand exhaust gas recirculation cooler on the ASE engine in the Audi A8 D3 (4E) comes out much like its left-hand partner, through the front of the car. After draining the coolant, the lock carrier is moved to service position, then the right intake manifold and the mechanical EGR valve are removed. The cooler bolts come out, the cooler lifts off the block and is separated from its connecting flange, which remains on the engine at this stage, and the coolant hoses are detached from the flange. The work is not complicated but it is fiddly at the back of the vee. Success depends on new seals throughout, the correct hose clips, fresh coolant and remembering the air suspension jacking mode and headlight check at the end.
🧭 Before you start
Drain the coolant, move the lock carrier to service position and remove the right intake manifold and the mechanical EGR valve. Unbolt the cooler, lift it off the block and part it from the connecting flange, then detach the coolant hoses. Reassemble in reverse with new seals, refit lock carrier and bumper cover, switch off jacking mode, fill the cooling system and check the headlights.
Fits: Audi A8 D3 (4E, 2002–2010)
- Opens: coolant
- Renewed: gaskets
Don't miss
- Only remove the connecting flange if the bottom flange seal needs renewing.
- Fit new gaskets, seals and O-rings, with hose clips of the original type.
- Fill with fresh coolant; the drained coolant must not go back in.
- Switch off jacking mode for the air suspension before final checks.
- Check headlight adjustment after refitting the lock carrier.

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
