Removing and installing dual-mass flywheel — AUDI

Removing and installing dual-mass flywheel on Audi: 11 steps, 2 torque figures, engines ACK, ACV, AFN, AGA.

On Audi models with the multitronic 0AW gearbox, including the A5 2007–2016 (8T), A5 Cabriolet (8F), A4 B8 2007–2015 (8K) and A6/A7 C7 2011–2018 (4G), the dual-mass flywheel is pulled off the gearbox input shaft rather than the crankshaft. The left flange shaft comes out first. Extractor T40176 is attached with its nut and turned upwards while the bottom of the flywheel is held so it cannot tilt, and the flywheel is drawn off straight. Before the new one goes on, the clutch housing area and the oil seal towards the differential are cleaned and checked, the seal lips are packed with sealing grease, and the input shaft splines get a thin coat of grease. Keeping the flywheel square and protecting its drive plate flange decide this one.

🧭 Before you start

Remove the left flange shaft, fit extractor T40176 and draw the dual-mass flywheel off the input shaft while supporting its lower edge. Lay it down so it does not rest on the drive plate flange. Clean the clutch housing and the differential oil seal, renew the seal if damaged, and fill between its lips half-full with sealing grease. Clean the input shaft, grease the splines thinly, slide the flywheel on straight and refit the flange shaft.

Fits: Audi A5 Cabriolet (8F), Audi A5 (8T, 2007–2016), Audi A4 B8 (8K, 2007–2015), Audi A6/A7 C7 (4G, 2011–2018); platform code 4X

Don't miss

  • Hold the bottom of the flywheel while extracting so it cannot tilt.
  • Never lay the flywheel on its drive plate flange; a bent flange causes clutch problems.
  • Renew the oil seal between differential and gearbox housing if it is damaged.
  • Pack the space between sealing lip and dust lip half-full with sealing grease.
  • Grease the input shaft splines thinly and slide the flywheel on square.

🔩 Torque settings

Values can differ between engine variants — check the code stamped on your block.

TorqueFastener / step
20 Nm (15 lb-ft)⚠ To avoid any risk of injury, do not rotate the crankshaft while feeling for the TDC…

ℹ️ Always cross-check the exact figure against your vehicle's factory manual before final tightening — a wrong torque can damage the engine. These values are extracted from workshop data and may not cover every variant or revision.

📋 Procedure

  1. Remove flange shaft (left-side) multitronic 0AW, front-wheel drive39Differential; Removing and installing flange shaft (left-side).
  2. Attach extractor T40176 to dual-mass flywheel (A) using nut (B)(arrow).
  3. Turn extractor T40176 upwards. [Note: Keep hold of the bottom of the dual-mass flywheel, as shown in the illustration, to prevent it from tilting over.]
  4. Pull dual-mass flywheel off input shaft (arrow) keeping dual-mass flywheel straight.
  5. ⚠ Take care not to damage flange for drive plate on dual-mass flywheel.Do not lay down the dual-mass flywheel so that it rests on the flange (arrow) for the drive plate. This could bend the flange (arrow) for the drive plate, which would cause problems with clutch operation. — Put dual-mass flywheel down carefully, e.g. on work bench.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
