Removing

Rear final drive removed

Secure complete rear final drive on a repair stand with bracket VW 540.
Place drip tray underneath to collect oil.
Drain gear oil.

Remove left and right-hand flange shafts.
To loosen the securing bolt, screw two bolts into the flange shaft and brace with a lever.
Mark flange shafts (left and right) and pull out.
Remove clutch body for differential lock (if fitted) =>page
39-233
. Selector fork and locking collar do not have to be removed.
Unscrew securing bolts from cover for final drive.
Take cover for final drive off axle housing and remove differential.

Installing

Installation is carried out in the reverse order, when doing this note the following:

Insert differential.
Clean sealing surface and coat with sealing paste AMV 188 200 03.
Fit final drive cover on axle housing and tighten bolts in diagonal sequence.
If applicable, install clutch body for differential lock with appropriate shim => page
39-233
.
Fill space between sealing and dust lips with multi-purpose grease.
Fit flange shafts and tighten.

Notes:

On vehicles with a differential lock there is a shim between the differential and the right flange shaft => page
39-240
.
This adjustment is only required if the left flange shaft, the differential housing or the differential bevel gears are being replaced.

Top up gear oil in rear final drive and check oil level => page
39-136
.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.

Seen a figure that does not match your manual? Write to us — we correct it and note when. support@torqfix.com
