Removing and installing cowling — AUDI
Removing and installing cowling on Audi: 9 steps, engines CKTB, CKTC, CKUB, CKUC. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.
This covers taking out the fan cowling on the platform codes listed below, fitted with the CKTB, CKTC, CKUB, CKUC, CSLA, CSLB, CSLC and CSNA engines. The cowling sits behind the viscous fan with coolant hoses clipped all over it, so the job is mostly about clearing what is in the way: the air filter comes out first, the power steering reservoir is unclipped and laid aside, any noise insulation is removed and the viscous fan itself has to come off before the shroud is free. After that the coolant hoses are unclipped from it, the bracket for the EGR cooler pump V400 is unbolted, and the cowling is released at its left and right retaining levers and lifted out. Patience with the plastic clips and levers decides whether it comes out whole or in pieces.
🧭 Before you start
Access starts at the top: air filter out, steering reservoir unclipped and moved aside, noise insulation off and the viscous fan removed. The coolant hoses are then unclipped from the cowling and the bracket for the EGR cooler pump V400 is unbolted. With the hoses free, the retaining levers on both sides are pressed forwards with a screwdriver while the air ducting is raised slightly, and the cowling lifts out upwards. Refitting is the reverse, with every hose clipped back into its original holder.
Fits: platform codes 2EA, 2FC
Don't miss
- The viscous fan must come off before the cowling; do not try to lever the shroud past it.
- Release the left and right retaining levers by pressing them forwards while lifting the air ducting slightly.
- Unclip every coolant hose from the cowling first; one forgotten clip will crack the plastic as you lift.
- Unbolt the EGR cooler pump V400 bracket rather than pulling the cowling against it.
- Route hoses back into their original clips so they cannot chafe on the fan.

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
