Removing and installing camshaft timing chains - vehicles from 03.2007 onwards — AUDI

Removing and installing camshaft timing chains - vehicles from 03.2007 onwards on Audi: 27 steps, engines BNS.

On the BNS V8 in the 8E and 8H body codes, cars from 03.2007 onwards, the camshaft timing chains are at the gearbox end, so this is an engine-out job. Clutch pressure plate and dual-mass flywheel come off, then both cylinder head covers, the left and right timing chain covers, the intake manifold, the oil filter housing and the bottom timing chain cover. Mark the running direction of each chain with coloured arrows if they are going back in; a used chain turned the other way can break, and punch marks or notches are not acceptable. Chain tensioners are locked with the T40071 pin, and the crankshaft must not be at TDC on any cylinder while the camshafts are turned. Angle-tightened bolts and gaskets are renewed.

27 steps 1 engine code

🧭 Before you start

With the engine out, remove the pressure plate, flywheel, head covers, timing chain covers, intake manifold, oil filter housing and bottom cover. Take the chains off the camshafts, then remove each tensioner with its chain after marking running direction. Lock the tensioners, fit new gaskets and refit tensioners and chains to the marks. Rebuild in reverse, including a crankshaft oil seal at the gearbox end, then fill and check engine oil.

Fits: Audi A4 Cabriolet B6/B7 (8H), Audi A4 B6/B7 (8E)

  • Timing position: the crankshaft or camshaft is set and locked during this job
  • Renewed: gasket

Don't miss

  • Mark chain running direction with coloured arrows; never with a centre punch or a notch.
  • The crankshaft must not be at TDC on any cylinder when the camshafts are turned.
  • Lock the chain tensioners with locking pin T40071 before fitting.
  • Renew angle-tightened bolts and tensioner gaskets.
  • Tensioning element orientation: drilling faces the tensioner, piston faces the tensioner rail.
  • Fill with engine oil and check the level after the engine is back in.

  1. Remove oil filter housing .
  2. Remove timing chain cover (bottom) .
  3. Remove camshaft timing chains from camshafts .
  4. ⚠ If a used camshaft timing chain rotates in the opposite direction when it is refitted, this can cause breakage.Mark running direction of camshaft timing chain with coloured arrows for re-installation. Do not attempt to mark the timing chain with a centre punch or by making a notch or similar. — Unscrew bolts (1) and (2) and remove chain tensioner (left-side) and camshaft timing chain (left-side).
  5. Unscrew bolts (1) and (2) and remove chain tensioner (right-side) and camshaft timing chain (right-side). [Note: Note the correct installation position if the tensioning element has been removed from the chain tensioner: drilling in base of housing faces chain tensioner and piston faces tensioner rail.Renew the bolts tightened with specified tightening angle.Renew gasket.]
  6. ⚠ Avoid damage to valves and piston crowns. The crankshaft must not be at "“TDC”" at any cylinder when the camshafts are turned. — Press guide rails of chain tensioners for camshaft timing chains (left and right) inwards in direction of (arrow) as far as the stop. Then lock chain tensioners by inserting locking pin T40071.
  7. If necessary, clean oil strainer (2) in both chain tensioners.
  8. Fit new gasket (3) to rear of chain tensioner (1).
  9. Install chain tensioner on cylinder head (left-side) and position camshaft timing chain as shown in the illustration (according to marks applied when removing).
  10. Tighten bolts (1) and (2).
  11. Install chain tensioner on cylinder head (right-side) and position camshaft timing chain as shown in the illustration (according to marks applied when removing).
  12. Tighten bolts (1) and (2).
  13. Position timing chains on camshafts .
  14. Install timing chain cover (bottom) .
  15. Install crankshaft oil seal (gearbox end) .
  16. Install oil filter housing .
  17. Install intake manifold 24.
  18. Install timing chain covers (left and right) .
  19. Install cylinder head cover: left-side , right-side .
  20. Install dual-mass flywheel .
  21. Install clutch pressure plate 30.
  22. After installing engine, fill up with engine oil and check oil level 803 or 805.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
