Removing and installing brake caliper (1LT / 1LY) — AUDI

Removing and installing brake caliper (1LT / 1LY) on Audi: 11 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.

Removing and installing a 1LT or 1LY brake caliper on the A5 Cabriolet (8F), A5 2007–2016 (8T) and A4 B8 2007–2015 (8K) is a short job, because the caliper is never split from its carrier. With the car raised and the wheel off, you free the brake hose from its bracket, unplug the pad wear indicator on the left-side caliper, then take out the carrier bolts and lift caliper, carrier and pads off the disc as one unit. Refitting is the same assembly pressed back over the disc and secured with new carrier bolts. Two things decide it: nobody touches the brake pedal while the caliper is off, and the old carrier bolts go in the bin rather than back in the hub.

11 steps

🧭 Before you start

Raise the car, remove the wheel, release the brake hose from its bracket and unplug the wear indicator on the left side. Undo the carrier bolts and lift caliper, carrier and pads off together. On refit, press the complete unit carefully over the disc, secure it with new bolts, clip the hose back into its bracket, then refit the wheel and lower the car.

Fits: Audi A5 Cabriolet (8F), Audi A5 (8T, 2007–2016), Audi A4 B8 (8K, 2007–2015)

Don't miss

  • Do not press the brake pedal while the caliper is off the disc, or the piston will push out.
  • Carrier bolts (5) are renewed, not reused.
  • Caliper, carrier and pads come off and go back as one unit; the caliper is not separated from the carrier.
  • Reconnect the pad wear indicator on the left-side caliper before the wheel goes back on.
  • Clip the brake hose back into its bracket so it cannot rub on the wheel or suspension.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
