Workshop procedure for AUDI — the exact step sequence and torque figures, straight from real workshop data.

37 steps 18 engine codes 4 torque figures engine codes and torque figures merged from 5 documented variants

🔩 Torque settings

Values can differ between engine variants — check the code stamped on your block.

TorqueFastener / step
10 Nm (7.4 lb-ft)Lock balance shaft with locking tool and tighten bolts for chain sprocket initially
13 Nm (9.6 lb-ft)Tighten bolts (5) and (7)
20 Nm (15 lb-ft)Tighten bolts (1 … 4), (6) and (8)
6 Nm (4.4 lb-ft)Pre-tighten bolts in the sequence

ℹ️ Always cross-check the exact figure against your vehicle's factory manual before final tightening — a wrong torque can damage the engine. These values are extracted from workshop data and may not cover every variant or revision.

📋 Procedure

  1. Remove sump .
  2. Lever off cover cap from vibration damper.
  3. Turn the crankshaft to TDC. [Note: For illustration purposes, the camshaft sprocket is shown with the toothed belt removed.]
  4. Lock hub with locking pin 3359. [Note: The following procedure is shown with the front sealing flange removed.]
  5. Unscrew bolts (arrows) and detach chain sprocket cover.

  1. Press guide rail for chain tensioner in (direction of arrow) using a screwdriver and lock chain tensioner with locking pin T10115.
  2. Remove bolts (1) and (3). [Note: Disregard (item 2).]
  3. Unscrew bolts (arrows) and detach chain sprocket from balance shaft.
  4. Unscrew bolts in the sequence (8 ... 1) and remove balance shaft assembly with oil pump. [Note: Renew bolts which are tightened to a specified angle and the chain sprocket for balance shaft assembly.]
  5. Tighten bolts securing balance shaft assembly as follows:
  6. Pre-tighten bolts in the sequence (1 ... 8) to 6 Nm. — 6 Nm (4.4 lb-ft)
  7. Tighten bolts (5) and (7) to 13 Nm. — 13 Nm (9.6 lb-ft)
  8. Turn bolts (5) and (7) 90° further using a rigid wrench.
  9. Tighten bolts (1 … 4), (6) and (8) to 20 Nm. — 20 Nm (15 lb-ft)
  10. Turn bolts (1 ... 4), (6) and (8) 90° further using a rigid wrench.
  11. Insert new sprocket (1) into chain – do not screw in securing bolts.
  12. Initially screw in bolts (2) and (3) finger-tight, but do not tighten.
  13. Remove locking pin T10115 from chain tensioner. [Note: Before tightening the chain sprocket for the balance shaft assembly turn the de-coupling element in the drive chain sprocket to its central position. To do so, you must align the arrows marked on the drive chain sprocket and its de-coupling element. However, these arrows are not visible with the sealing flange fitted. The following description explains how to achieve the central position without the aid of these arrows.]
  14. Turn chain sprocket (1) as far as right stop using counterhold tool T10172(arrows).
  15. In this position mark drive chain position (1) to hole (2) in balance shaft assembly.
  16. Use counterhold tool T10172 to turn chain sprocket (1) back as far as left stop (arrows).
  17. At this point, mark current position of drive chain (3) opposite hole (2) in balance shaft assembly.
  18. Then turn chain sprocket (1) back again until de-coupling element (2) of drive chain sprocket is located in central position. [Note: As the de-coupling element of the drive chain sprocket is not visible with the front sealing flange fitted, the central position is determined at the bottom of the drive chain.]
  19. The chain sprocket has to be turned back, until it reaches the central position exactly between the markings (1) and (3) on the drive chain.
  20. Lock balance shaft with locking tool T10255.
  21. Check whether elongated holes of chain sprocket align with tapped holes of balance shaft.
  22. Secure tensioner with locking pin T10115 and unscrew bolts (2) and (3).
  23. Turn chain sprocket (1) in drive chain one tooth further.
  24. Tighten bolts.
  25. Remove locking pin T10115.
  26. Use new bolts to secure chain sprocket (arrows).
  27. Lock balance shaft with locking tool T10255 and tighten bolts for chain sprocket initially to 10 Nm. — 10 Nm (7.4 lb-ft)
  28. Turn bolts (arrows) for chain sprocket 90° further.
  29. Fit chain tensioner cover (arrows).
  30. Remove locking pin 3359. [Note: Disregard (arrows).]
  31. Install sump .
  32. Fill up with engine oil and check oil level 803 or 805.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.

Seen a figure that does not match your manual? Write to us — we correct it and note when. support@torqfix.com
