Part I: Sump, balance shaft assembly - exploded view — AUDI
Part I: Sump, balance shaft assembly - exploded view on Audi: 4 steps, 4 torque figures, engines BGB, BPG, BPJ, BUL.
These are the sump tightening steps from the sump and balance shaft assembly overview for the BGB, BPG, BPJ, BUL, BWE, BWT and BYK engines, fitted to the Audi A4 B6/B7 (8E) and the related 8H platform. The sump has to pull down evenly against the block and gearbox to seal without distorting, so the order matters as much as the values. Bolts numbered 1 to 18 are first pre-tightened to 5 Nm in a diagonal sequence. The bolts joining the sump to the gearbox go to 45 Nm, the M10 bolts to 40 Nm, and finally bolts 1 to 18 are taken to 15 Nm, again diagonally. Following that order, rather than torquing any single bolt fully first, keeps the flange flat and the joint dry.
🧭 Before you start
Fit the sump and run in bolts 1 to 18, pre-tightening them to 5 Nm in diagonal sequence. Tighten the sump-to-gearbox bolts to 45 Nm and the M10 bolts to 40 Nm, then bring bolts 1 to 18 up to 15 Nm in the same diagonal pattern.
Fits: Audi A4 Cabriolet B6/B7 (8H), Audi A4 B6/B7 (8E)
Don't miss
- Pre-tighten bolts 1 to 18 to 5 Nm in diagonal sequence before any final torque.
- Sump-to-gearbox bolts take 45 Nm; the M10 bolts take 40 Nm.
- Final stage: bolts 1 to 18 to 15 Nm, again diagonally.
- As general practice, make sure the sealing faces are clean and dry before fitting the sump.

🔩 Torque settings
Values can differ between engine variants — check the code stamped on your block.
| Torque | Fastener / step |
|---|---|
| 15 Nm (11 lb-ft) | Tighten bolts |
| 40 Nm (30 lb-ft) | Tighten bolts M10 (arrows) |
| 45 Nm (33 lb-ft) | Tighten bolts securing sump to gearbox |
| 5 Nm (3.7 lb-ft) | Pre-tighten bolts |
ℹ️ Always cross-check the exact figure against your vehicle's factory manual before final tightening — a wrong torque can damage the engine. These values are extracted from workshop data and may not cover every variant or revision.

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
