Installing cylinder head - all vehicles: Audi A6/A7 C7 2.0 (CAEB, CAED, CDNB, CDZA, …)
Step-by-step installing cylinder head - all vehicles for the Audi A6/A7 C7 2.0: 13 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.
Fitting the cylinder head back on the A6/A7 (4G, 2011–2018) and cars with code 4X, covering engines CAEB, CAED, CDNB, CDZA and CHJA, including the hybrid version with a high-voltage system. Before the gasket goes down, both sealing faces are cleaned of sealant without scoring, and the bolt blind holes in the block must be free of oil and coolant. If the crankshaft was turned, set No. 1 cylinder to TDC and back it off slightly so the valves cannot touch the pistons. The head goes on, bolts are hand-tightened and then torqued in the set sequence; they do not need re-torquing later. After that come the camshafts, upper timing chain cover, compressor, front silencer, fresh oil and coolant. On the hybrid, only a qualified high-voltage technician may re-energise the system.
🧭 Before you start
Clean the faces, keep the bolt holes dry and fit the new gasket straight from its packaging. Set the crankshaft just short of TDC, fit the head and tighten the bolts in sequence. Bring the damper to TDC with the counterhold tool, then fit camshafts, upper timing chain cover, air conditioner compressor and front silencer, change the oil and fill with fresh coolant.
Fits: Audi A6/A7 C7 (4G, 2011–2018); platform code 4X
- Opens: coolant
- Timing position: the crankshaft or camshaft is set and locked during this job
Don't miss
- No oil or coolant may remain in the head bolt blind holes in the block.
- Leave the new gasket in its packaging until fitting; protect its coating and indented area.
- If the crank was turned, set TDC then turn it back slightly before the head goes on.
- On hybrid versions, only a qualified high-voltage technician may re-energise the system via guided fault finding.
- Turn the engine at least two rotations by hand after valve gear work to confirm no valve contact.

📋 Procedure
- ⚠ Avoid damage to sealing surfaces.Carefully remove sealant residue from cylinder head and cylinder block.Ensure that no long scores or scratches are made on the surfaces.Avoid damage to cylinder block. No oil or coolant must be allowed to remain in the blind holes for the cylinder head bolts in the cylinder block.Ensure that cylinder head gasket seals properly:Carefully remove any remaining emery and abrasive material.Do not remove new cylinder head gasket from packaging until it is ready to be fitted.Handle the cylinder head gasket very carefully to prevent damage to the silicone coating or the indented area of the gasket.Avoid damage to open valves. When installing an exchange cylinder head, the plastic protectors fitted to protect the open valves should not be removed until the cylinder head is ready to be fitted.Avoid damage to valves and piston crowns after working on valve gear.Turn the engine carefully at least 2 rotations to ensure that none of the valves make contact when the starter is operated. — Place cylinder head gasket in position.
- ⚠ Make sure that components are not damaged by the timing chain when rotating the crankshaft. — If crankshaft has been rotated: set No. 1 cylinder piston to top dead centre and then turn crankshaft back slightly.
- Fit cylinder head.
- Insert and hand-tighten cylinder head bolts.
- Tightening sequence for cylinder head “Tightening sequence for cylinder head” [Note: Cylinder head bolts do not have to be torqued down again later after repair work.]
- Turn vibration damper to "“TDC”" position (arrow) using counterhold tool T10355.
- Install camshafts .
- Install timing chain cover (top) .
- Install electrical air conditioner compressor V470Heating, air conditioning87Air conditioner compressor; Detaching and attaching air conditioner compressor at bracket. - ⚠ High voltage can cause fatal injury. Danger of severe or fatal injuries from electric shock. The high-voltage system may only be re-energised by a suitably qualified person (Audi high-voltage technician). The system may only be re-energised using the vehicle diagnostic tester via "“Guided Fault Finding”". The vehicle is then made ready for operation again by the qualified person (Audi high-voltage technician). The qualified person (Audi high-voltage technician) marks the vehicle by attaching the appropriate warning signs. — Install catalytic converter:
- Install front silencer .
- Change engine oil 411.
- ⚠ Never use battery charging equipment for boost starting. There is danger of damaging the vehicle's control units. — Fill cooling system with fresh coolant .

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
