Installing bevel boxes as of model year 2010 — AUDI
Installing bevel boxes as of model year 2010 on Audi: 20 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.
Refitting the bevel box (front angle drive) to the manual gearbox on four-wheel-drive Transporter T5 and T6 vans, model year 2010 on. It is a two-person lift: the unit is turned with the propshaft flange uppermost, guided past the steering rack and swung into position so the lay shaft splines meet the differential splines squarely. The bevel box must go fully home by hand before any bolts go in; pulling it on with the securing bolts cants it and can break the bolt lugs. After that the steering rack, stub shaft bolt, torque reaction support, bevel box carrier, drive shaft, subframe, particulate filter and front propshaft go back. The other critical point is the right stub shaft: keep it from being pushed out while aligning splines, and renew its circlip and oil seal.
🧭 Before you start
Grease the differential splines, offer the bevel box up with a helper and seat it fully onto the gearbox before fitting the lower and upper connecting bolts. Refit the steering rack, the stub shaft countersunk bolt while counterholding, and a new circlip and oil seal. Then bolt up the torque reaction support and carrier in sequence, refit drive shaft, subframe, particulate filter and propshaft, and check oil in both gearbox and bevel box.
Fits: VW Transporter T5 (7H), VW Transporter T5 (7J), VW Transporter T6 (7E), VW Transporter T6 (7F)
Don't miss
- Seat the bevel box fully by hand; never draw it on with the securing bolts.
- Watch that the right stub shaft is not pushed out of the bevel box while aligning splines.
- Renew the stub shaft circlip and oil seal; grease the splines before refitting.
- Follow the tightening sequence for the bevel box carrier bolts.
- Check gear oil in both the gearbox and the bevel box before the van goes out.

📋 Procedure
- Grease splines of differential with grease for clutch plate splinesElectronic Parts Catalogue. [Note: The aid of a second mechanic is required to position the bevel box.]
- Turn bevel box until propshaft flange is at top.
- Lift bevel box and guide it past steering rack.
- Turn bevel box into installation position and bolt fully onto manual gearbox. In the process, guide splines of bevel box lay shaft concentrically together with splines of differential.
- Align splines of right stub shaft and differential bevel gear, turning stub shaft if necessary. [Note: In the process, ensure that installation position of stub shaft does not change (is not pushed out of bevel box).Do not use securing bolts to pull bevel box onto gearbox, or bevel box will cant and bolt holes can break off.]
- Screw in lower bevel box/manual gearbox connecting bolts (arrows) and tighten them.
- Screw in upper bevel box/manual gearbox connecting bolts (arrows) and tighten them.
- Mount steering rack on universal joint and track rods on wheel bearing housing Running gear, axles, steering48Removing and installing steering rack.
- Screw in countersunk bolt for right stub shaft with socket and extended bit 6 mm T10107 A, and tighten it. Counterhold stub shaft using counterhold tool T10140/counterhold tool T50053 while doing so.
- Renew circlip (arrow A) and oil seal (arrow B) of stub shaft.
- Grease splines of right stub shaft with grease for clutch plate splinesElectronic Parts Catalogue.
- Bolt rear torque reaction support to cylinder block 10Assembly mountings.
- Bolt bevel box carrier (3) to rear torque reaction support and bevel box (bolts (1) and (2)), note tightening sequence when doing so.
- Push right drive shaft onto stub shaft Running gear, axles, steering40Drive shafts.
- Install subframe with bracket for rear torque reaction support Running gear, axles, steering40Removing and installing subframe.
- Install particulate filter 26.
- Install front propshaft 39.
- Check gear oil in gearbox .
- Check gear oil in bevel box .

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
