Installing auxiliary/supplementary heater: Audi Q7
Step-by-step installing auxiliary/supplementary heater for the Audi Q7: 15 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.
Workshop procedure for AUDI — the exact step sequence and torque figures, straight from real workshop data.
🧭 Before you start
Fits: Audi Q7 (4L, 2005–2015)
- Special tools named: VAS 5051
Don't miss
- If applicable, open the cap of the coolant expansion tank. Fill the expansion tank with coolant if necessary as far as the upper mark Engine, mechanics19.
- Fill the coolant expansion tank with coolant as far as the upper mark Engine, mechanics19..
- Check the position of the air intake and the intake air silencer of the auxiliary/supplementary heater (air inlet must not be impeded).
📋 Procedure
- Connect the coolant hoses (supply and return to engine) and secure the clamps (1). [Note: Contrary to the illustration, the coolant hoses from and to the heat exchanger in the rear air conditioning unit are additionally to be connected and secured on vehicles with "“Rear air conditioner”" as optional extra Air conditioning87.]
- Unfasten the hose clamps (e.g. hose clamps up to dia. 25 mm3094) from the supply and return to the engine (if applicable also from and to heat exchanger in rear air conditioning unit).
- Wait until coolant emerges at the auxiliary/supplementary heater, at the supply and return to the heat exchanger in the front air conditioning unit . [Note: If applicable, open the cap of the coolant expansion tank. Fill the expansion tank with coolant if necessary as far as the upper mark Engine, mechanics19.]
- Connect the coolant hoses (supply and return to heat exchanger in front air conditioning unit) and secure the clamps (1).
- Unfasten the hose clamps (e.g. the hose clamps up to dia. 25 mm3094).
- Fill the coolant expansion tank with coolant as far as the upper mark Engine, mechanics19..
- Bleed the auxiliary/supplementary heater coolant circuit . [Note: Following installation, check the exhaust pipe, the coolant hoses, the fuel line and the wiring to the auxiliary/supplementary heater (must not make contact with other components). The rating plate (duplicate plate) is to be checked and replaced if applicable on renewing the auxiliary/supplementary heater. If the auxiliary/supplementary heater has been replaced, the year of initial commissioning for the newly installed heater is to be entered on the heater rating plate and on the new "“duplicate rating plate”" (the illustration shows a rating plate for an auxiliary heater in a vehicle with petrol engine as used at the start of production). There are different versions of the nameplate and the rating plate. This illustration shows a nameplate and a rating plate (duplicate plate) applicable at the start of production.]
- Check the position of the air intake and the intake air silencer of the auxiliary/supplementary heater (air inlet must not be impeded).
- If necessary, deactivate the component protection for a newly installed auxiliary/supplementary heater to cancel the interlocking of the auxiliary/supplementary heater by the component protection function "Guided fault-finding" function of vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051.
- Check the encoding of the supplementary heater control unit J364"Guided fault-finding" function of vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051.
- Interrogate the event recorder of the supplementary heater control unit J364 and erase any faults displayed Vehicle diagnostic, testing and information systemVAS 5051 A, "Guided fault-finding" function.
- Check operation of the auxiliary/supplementary heater remote control and perform adaption of the supplementary heater control unit J364 if necessary Vehicle diagnostic, testing and information systemVAS 5051 A, "Guided fault-finding" function. [Note: If the auxiliary/supplementary heater is replaced together with the supplementary heater control unit J364, check operation of at least one hand transmitter and re-adapt all hand transmitters if necessary (adaption of remote control hand transmitter) Vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system5051 A, "Guided fault-finding" function.]
- Interrogate the adaption of the supplementary heater control unit J364 and if necessary enter the adaption value "“5”" in the adaption channel "“Line filling”" (if a value other than "“0”" is displayed) Vehicle diagnostic, testing and information systemVAS 5051 A, "Guided fault-finding" function. [Note: If the value displayed in the "“Line filling”" adaption channel was other than "“0”", perform the "“Line filling”" function in the "“Basic setting”" routine (the metering pump V54 is actuated for the time set in the "“Line filling”" adaption channel, the adaption in the "“Line filling”" adaption channel is reset to "“0”" and the "“Line filling”" fault is erased) Vehicle diagnostic, testing and information systemVAS 5051 A, "Guided fault-finding" function. To stop too much fuel being conveyed into the auxiliary/supplementary heater with the fuel line already filled, the value entered for the "“Line filling”" function in the "“Basic setting”" routine must not be greater than "“5”" in the "“Line filling”" adaption channel.]
- Start the engine and interrogate the event recorder of all control units fitted (faults may also have been entered for other control units by way of the convenience data bus system) Vehicle diagnostic, testing and information systemVAS 5051 A, "Guided fault-finding" function.
- After replacing auxiliary/supplementary heater components, switch on the auxiliary/supplementary heater before handing over the vehicle to the customer and allow the auxiliary/supplementary heater to run for some time (at least 10 minutes) in full load operation. There may still be remnants of factory lubricant for example in the components and these would evaporate following initial activation as soon as the components become hot.

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
Seen a figure that does not match your manual? Write to us — we correct it and note when. support@torqfix.com
