Dismantling and assembling clutch "“A”" — AUDI

Fits: Audi A4 Cabriolet B6/B7 (8H), Audi A4 B5 (8D), Audi A4 B6/B7 (8E), Audi A6 C5 (4B), Audi A8 D2 (4D)

Don't miss

• Make sure that the rounded edges of the thick outer plate face friction plate (4) and not circlip (6). The contact surface for the circlip is thus increased.
• Mark contact point on cylinder "“A”".
• Repeat measurement at two other points on outer plate (offset by 120°) and mark measuring points.
• (Item 2) can be disregarded.

📋 Procedure

1. Turn clutch "“A”" upside down.
2. Detach circlip (1) and remove set of plates (2) from cylinder "“A”".
3. Press dished spring down using workshop press with mounting bracket T10276.
4. Remove split retaining ring (1).
5. Release workshop press.

6. Remove dished spring.
7. Pry ring (2) with O-ring (3) out of cylinder "“A”"(item 1).
8. ⚠ Wear safety goggles. — Carefully press piston "“A”" out of cylinder "“A”" by applying compressed air (cover remaining two oil drillings with your fingers).
9. ⚠ Before assembly, check the components of clutch "“A”" for traces of wear and damage . — Renew O-rings (2) (green), (3) (black) and (5) (black) for piston "“A”"(item 4).
10. Push piston "“A”", (item 4) into cylinder "“A”", (item 1) as far as stop.
11. Fit dished spring (6).
12. Press dished spring down using workshop press with mounting bracket T10276.
13. Insert split retaining ring (1).
14. Release workshop press.
15. Insert corrugated spring (2) into cylinder "“A”"(item 1).
16. Fit outer plates (3) and friction plates (4) alternately.
17. Insert thick outer plate (5). [Note: Make sure that the rounded edges of the thick outer plate face friction plate (4) and not circlip (6). The contact surface for the circlip is thus increased.]
18. Insert circlip (6).
19. Position clutch "“A”" onto compressor tool T10285.
20. Position holding plate T10293 onto outer plate of clutch "“A”".
21. Fit centring pin of thrust piece T10285/1 into drilling in holding plate.
22. Bring clutch "“A”" into correct position on holding plate of compressor tool.
23. Turn spindle of compressor tool downwards.
24. Apply digital depth gaugeVAS 6087 to upper rim of cylinder "“A”" as shown in illustration.
25. Bring measuring tip into contact with outer plate and note value obtained.
26. Mark contact point on cylinder "“A”".
27. Repeat measurement at two other points on outer plate (offset by 120°) and mark measuring points.
28. Determine average value from the three measurements under load.
29. Release spindle and remove holding plate.
30. Use both hands to pull set of plates upwards as far as possible in clutch "“A”".
31. With set of plates pulled up as far as stop, measure distance between upper rim of cylinder "“A”" and outer plate at one of the points marked (assistance of second mechanic required).
32. Repeat measurement at the two remaining markings on the outer plate.
33. Determine average value from the three measurements with set of plates pulled up as far as stop.
34. Determine clearance using the following formula:
35. Subtract mean value of measurement with set of plates pulled up as far as stop from mean value of measurements under load.
36. Determine new circlip (1) according to following table. [Note: (Item 2) can be disregarded.]
37. Check clearance again after inserting circlip.
38. Renew O-ring (3) on ring (2).
39. Press ring into cylinder "“A”"(item 1) as far as stop.
