Detaching and attaching pulley at compressor (version "“1”") — AUDI
Detaching and attaching pulley at compressor (version "“1”") on Audi: 18 steps, 2 torque figures. What to remove, what to tighten and to how many Nm, what.
Workshop procedure for AUDI — the exact step sequence and torque figures, straight from real workshop data.
🧭 Before you start
Fits: Audi Q7 (4L, 2005–2015)
Don't miss
- Depending on production period, the drive plates fitted may have 3 holes (as shown) or a hexagon head on the front.
- Renew circlip (A).Clean compressor flange before attaching pulley. When fitting circlip (A), take care not to bend it open more than necessary.
- Ensure that circlip (A) is fitted correctly. Bevelled side (C) faces away from compressor (flat side faces compressor).
- Before installing drive plate, coat rubber elements (D) slightly with lubricant (e.g. tyre fitting paste or soap solution).
🔩 Torque settings
Values can differ between engine variants — check the code stamped on your block.
| Torque | Fastener / step |
|---|---|
| 35 Nm (26 lb-ft) | Hold the compressor drive shaft (B) in position for example with a socket attachment or a… |
| 35 Nm (26 lb-ft) | Tighten the drive plate (C) |
ℹ️ Always cross-check the exact figure against your vehicle's factory manual before final tightening — a wrong torque can damage the engine. These values are extracted from workshop data and may not cover every variant or revision.
📋 Procedure
- Remove the noise insulation (e.g. on vehicles with 6-cyl. engine or 12-cyl. TDI engine) General body repairs, exterior66.
- Move the lock carrier (C) to service position (e.g. on 12-cyl. TDI engine) General body repairs, exterior50.
- Slacken off and detach poly V-belt Engine, mechanics13.
- If applicable, remove power steering pump (only on vehicles with 6-cyl. petrol engine) Running gear48. [Note: Pulley is made of plastic, is sensitive to impact and should be treated with special care.If overload protection of drive plate (C) has been triggered, remove circlip (A) and then prise drive plate off pulley (D).Depending on production period, the drive plates fitted may have 3 holes (as shown) or a hexagon head on the front. To improve noise insulation, a plastic disc (B) may be bonded to the drive plate of the pulley (A) or alternatively a circlip with a vulcanised rubber disc may be fitted (on drive plate version with 3 holes) Electronic parts catalogue. This plastic or rubber disc (B) reduces the rattling (castanet-like) noise which can occur at the pulley particularly in the case of vehicles with diesel engine with the compressor switched off (e.g. in air conditioner "“Econ”" mode) (in air conditioner full load operation the noise is scarcely audible). On drive plate version with hexagon head (instead of holes), circlip without rubber disc will be fitted until further notice.]
- Remove plastic disc (B) from pulley (A) (if fitted).
- Use a small screwdriver or pointed-nose pliers, for example, to carefully remove the circlip (A) (possibly with vulcanised rubber disc), taking particular care not to damage the pulley.
- Hold the compressor drive shaft (B) in position for example with a socket attachment or a socket wrench T10001/10 from the wrench set (depending on compressor version) and turn the drive plate (C) with the pulley (D) in direction of arrow (E) (tightening torque 35 Nm). [Note: Depending on production period, the drive plates fitted may have 3 holes (as shown) or a hexagon head on the front.] — 35 Nm (26 lb-ft)
- Remove circlip (A).
- Detach pulley (B). [Note: Renew circlip (A).Clean compressor flange before attaching pulley. When fitting circlip (A), take care not to bend it open more than necessary.]
- Install pulley (B).
- Ensure that circlip (A) is fitted correctly. Bevelled side (C) faces away from compressor (flat side faces compressor).
- Insert rubber elements (D) into pulley (B) as shown.
- Before installing drive plate, coat rubber elements (D) slightly with lubricant (e.g. tyre fitting paste or soap solution).
- Insert drive plate (C) in rubber elements (D) until it makes contact with shaft of compressor (B).
- Screw drive plate (C) onto compressor shaft (B) by turning it in direction of arrow (F).
- Tighten the drive plate (C) to 35 Nm by turning it with a commercially available strap wrench (with fabric strap) or an Allen key (depending on version) in direction of arrow (E). Provide support for the compressor shaft (A) by applying a counterhold (B) (e.g. socket attachment or socket wrench T10001/10 from wrench set) to the compressor shaft (A). — 35 Nm (26 lb-ft)
- Fit circlip (A).
- Clean drive plate of pulley (A) and bond plastic disc (B) to centre of drive plate (applies only to compressors with 3 holes in drive plate and no rubber disc attached to circlip). [Note: Depending on production period, the drive plates fitted (A) may have 3 holes (as shown) or a hexagon head on the front. If necessary, fit a plastic disc (B) on version with 3 holes (currently not planned for version with hexagon head). From Model Year 2007 onwards, circlips with a vulcanised rubber disc are being introduced gradually. Do not bond a plastic disc on these compressors.]

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
