Checking shift mechanism — AUDI
Checking shift mechanism on Audi: factory workshop procedure. Full factory text, tools and checks.
Workshop procedure for AUDI — the factory write-up, straight from real workshop data.
📋 Procedure
01V 01VA
Selector lever in "P" position and ignition switched on:
Brake pedal not depressed:
Selector lever is locked and cannot be shifted out of "P" position when the button in the selector lever handle is pressed. The solenoid for the selector lever lock locks the selector lever.
Brake pedal depressed:
Solenoid for selector lever lock releases selector lever. It should be possible to engage a gear smoothly when the button on the selector lever handle is pressed.
Slowly shift the selector lever from "P" through "R, N, D, 4, 3, 2" checking whether the selector lever position in the dash panel insert is the same as the selector lever position.
Selector lever in "N" position and ignition switched on:
Brake pedal not depressed:
Selector lever is locked and cannot be shifted out of "N" position when the button in the selector lever handle is pressed. The solenoid for the selector lever lock locks the selector lever.
Brake pedal depressed:
Solenoid for selector lever lock releases selector lever. It should be possible to engage a gear smoothly when the button on the selector lever handle is pressed.
Additional testing for shift mechanisms with Tiptronic only:
Selector lever in "D" position; ignition and light switched on
Start the engine and run at idling speed.
Apply the hand brake and press the brake pedal.
Shift the selector lever out of "D" into the Tiptronic gate. The illuminated "D" symbol on the shift mechanism cover must go out and the "+" and "-" symbols must illuminate.
The selector lever setting display in the dash panel insert must switch from "PRDN432" to "54321" when the selector lever shifts into the Tiptronic gate.
Notes:
The starter cannot be actuated if the selector lever is set to "2", "3", "4", "D", and "R".
In the case of RHD vehicles, it should only be possible to actuate the starter with the selector lever set to "P" or "N" if the lock button in the handle of the selector lever has not been actuated.
At speeds over 5 km/h and with the selector lever set to "N", the solenoid for the selector lever lock should not engage and should lock the selector lever. Selector lever can be shifted into a driving gear.
When travelling at speeds below 2 km/h (almost stopped) and shifting into selector lever position "N", solenoid for selector lever lock must not engage until after approx. 1s. Selector lever cannot be shifted out of "N" position until brake pedal is depressed.

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
Seen a figure that does not match your manual? Write to us — we correct it and note when. support@torqfix.com
