Adjusting shift mechanism with 2nd gear engaged — AUDI
Adjusting shift mechanism with 2nd gear engaged on Audi: 26 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.
On the Transporter T5 and T6 (7H, 7E and 7F codes listed below) the manual gearbox shift cables are set with 2nd gear engaged at the gearbox and the gear lever locked in the 1st/2nd gate. The selector lever sleeve, centre left knee padding and middle footwell trim come off so both cable end-piece locks can be pushed down and released. At the gearbox, adjusting gauge T10217 sets the selector shaft position while the lever is moved back; inside, locking pin T10027 pins the gear lever to the selector housing. Both cable locks are then pressed in, gate cable first, and the pins removed. The test is the shaft play: with 1st engaged and the lever pushed left, the selector shaft needs about 1 mm clearance.
🧭 Before you start
Remove the lever sleeve, knee padding and footwell trim and release both cable end-piece locks. Fit gauge T10217 on the selector shaft, press it down and shift the gearbox lever back, then remove the gauge. Put the gear lever in the 1st/2nd gate, pin it with T10027, lock the gate cable then the gear cable, and remove the pin. Refit the trims, select all gears including reverse with the clutch down, and check about 1 mm selector shaft clearance with a second person watching.
Fits: VW Transporter T5 (7H), VW Transporter T6 (7E), VW Transporter T6 (7F)

Don't miss
- Release both cable end-piece locks before setting the gearbox side.
- Lock the gate selector cable before the gear selector cable.
- Remove locking pin T10027 before trying the gears.
- Check reverse gear lock operation when cycling through all gears.
- Selector shaft needs approximately 1 mm clearance; otherwise readjust.

📋 Procedure
- Pull selector lever sleeve up out of gear lever panel and slip over selector lever knob.
- Remove centre left knee padding 70.
- Remove middle footwell trim 70.
- Push down locking mechanism for cable end-piece (A) on gear selector cable to stop (arrow).
- Push down locking mechanism for cable end-piece (1) on gate selector cable to stop (arrow).
- In order to gain access to selector shaft, it may be necessary to remove engine cover panel.
- Push adjusting gauge T10217 between gearbox selector lever (A) and selector mechanism cover (B) from in front onto selector shaft to stop.
- At the same time, press gearbox selector lever and selector shaft down against adjusting gauge T10217 to stop in (direction of arrow 1).
- Now shift gearbox selector level to back (direction of arrow 2).
- Remove adjusting gauge T10217 from selector shaft.
- Move gear lever in neutral leftwards into selector lever gate for 1st and 2nd gears.
- Guide locking pin T10027 through hole (A) of gear lever into hole (B) of selector housing.
- Now press in (direction of arrow) against lug of securing mechanism for cable end-piece (1) on gate selector cable.
- Then press in (direction of arrow) against lug of securing mechanism for cable end-piece (A) on gear selector cable.
- Pull locking pin T10027 out of holes of gear stick (A) and selector housing (B).
- Shift gearbox to neutral position, and check function of selector mechanism.
- Install centre left knee cushion 70.
- Install middle footwell trim 70.
- Clip selector lever sleeve into gear lever panel.
- Depress clutch pedal.
- Select all gears several times. Pay particular attention to operation of reverse gear lock.
- Engage 1st gear.
- Press gear lever left to stop and release.
- At the same time, a second mechanic should observe selector shaft in gearbox.
- When gear lever is moved, selector shaft must have approximately 1 mm clearance (in direction of arrow).
- If this is not the case, adjust selector mechanism .

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
