Calibrating reversing camera R189 — AUDI

Calibrating reversing camera R189 on Audi: 24 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.

After the rear camera R189 on an Audi A4 (B9, 8W) has been removed, replaced or knocked out of position, it has to be calibrated with the calibration unit VAS 6350 and the diagnostic tester. The job is mostly setup: wheel centre mountings with paddles are fitted to the rear wheels, the calibration unit is placed behind the car and squared to the rear axle using the spacing laser until both sides read the same, with the line laser on the centre of the rings and the spirit level central. Then the unit height and the distance from lens to wheel contact patch are measured and entered in the test plan. Calibration quality depends entirely on how carefully the rig is aligned and measured.

24 steps

🧭 Before you start

Check the requirements and connect the tester. Fit three wheel bolt adapters to each wheel centre mounting to match the hole circle, mount them on the rear wheels and set the paddles just above the ground. Align the calibration unit with the spacing laser until both sides read the same, keeping the line laser and spirit level central. Measure the unit height and the lens-to-contact-patch distance, then run the calibration from the test plan under Own test.

Fits: Audi A4 B9 (8W, 2015–)

Don't miss

  • Match the wheel bolt adapters to the wheel hole circle before fitting the centre mountings.
  • Paddles must swing freely just above the ground.
  • The spacing laser must sit firmly against the bracket when measuring each side.
  • Adjust until both side readings are identical, with the line laser centred on the rings.
  • Write down unit height and lens-to-contact-patch distance; both go into the test plan.

📋 Procedure

  1. Ensure requirements are met .
  2. Connect .
  3. Check the bolt hole circle pattern on the wheels.
  4. Prepare wheel centre mountingsVAS 6350/1 as required.
  5. To do so, secure three wheel bolt adapters to each wheel centre mountingVAS 6350/1 to match the hole circle.

  1. Position paddles on both wheel centre mountingsVAS 6350/1 and secure each paddle with clamping bolt.
  2. Fit wheel centre mountingsVAS 6350/1 onto wheel bolts on rear wheels. [Note: When fitting the wheel centre mountingsVAS 6350/1 onto the wheels, make sure that they are not mounted on any "“anti-theft”" wheel bolts that might be installed.]
  3. Use clamping bolts to adjust paddles so that they are free to move just slightly above the ground. Make sure the paddles can move freely.
  4. Set up and align calibration unitVAS 6350.
  5. Switch on spacing laserVAS 6350/2.
  6. Hold spacing laserVAS 6350/2(2) flush with bracket on one side of the calibration unit as shown in illustration. Spacing laserVAS 6350/2(2) must make firm contact with bracket.
  7. Briefly press the measurement button.
  8. Hold spacing laserVAS 6350/2 in locating bracket on calibration unitVAS 6350 with one hand while laser beam is visible on paddle.
  9. Now press measurement button briefly to measure distance.
  10. Note down the measured value.
  11. Perform same measuring procedure for rear wheel on other side of calibration unitVAS 6350.
  12. Adjust calibration unitVAS 6350 until values on both sides are identical.
  13. When adjusting, make sure that linear laserVAS 6350/3 hits centre of Audi rings and spirit level display also remains central. Correct if necessary.
  14. Measure height of calibration unitVAS 6350: dimension (H) (top edge of platform - floor).
  15. Finally, measure distance from centre of reversing camera lens to wheel contact patch using a commercially available folding rule.
  16. Note the dimension measured.
  17. Select Diagnosis mode and start diagnosis.
  18. Select Test plan tab.
  19. Select Own test then the following options one after the other:

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
