Adjusting selector mechanism, vehicles with no retaining pin on selector unit — AUDI

Adjusting selector mechanism, vehicles with no retaining pin on selector unit on Audi: 27 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.

This sets the manual gearshift cables on Transporter T5 and T6 family vans (the platform codes listed below) where the selector unit has no retaining pin. The method locks both ends at a known neutral point and then lets the cable end-pieces clamp themselves. Under the bonnet the charge air hose comes off for access to the gearbox; inside, the lever sleeve, the centre left knee cushion and the footwell trim are removed. The locking mechanisms on the gear and gate selector cable end-pieces are pushed down, the gearbox selector shaft is pulled up and held with gauge T10216, and the gear lever is pinned to the selector housing with T10027 A in the 1st/2nd gate. The check afterwards needs two people: the selector shaft must move about 1 mm when the lever is pushed left in 1st.

27 steps

🧭 Before you start

Remove the charge air hose, the gear lever sleeve, the centre left knee cushion and the footwell trim. Release both cable end-piece locks, pull the selector shaft up and fit gauge T10216, then pin the gear lever in the 1st/2nd gate with locking pin T10027 A. Press the locking lugs on the gate and gear selector cable end-pieces to clamp them, remove the pin, shift to neutral and take the gauge off. Check all gears and the reverse lock, then confirm the shaft moves about 1 mm in 1st before refitting the trim and hose.

Fits: VW Transporter T5 (7H), VW Transporter T5 (7J), VW Transporter T6 (7E), VW Transporter T6 (7F)

  • Timing position: the crankshaft or camshaft is set and locked during this job

Don't miss

  • Push both cable end-piece locks down to the stop before setting the gauge.
  • Pin the gear lever with T10027 A in the 1st/2nd gate, not in neutral.
  • Remove the gauge and pin before trying the gears, then check reverse gear lock operation.
  • A second mechanic must watch the selector shaft: about 1 mm of movement in 1st, otherwise readjust.

  1. Push down locking mechanism (1) on cable end-piece (2) on gate selector cable to stop (arrow).
  2. Pull selector shaft on gearbox selector lever upwards in (direction of arrow 1).
  3. When pulling selector shaft upwards, push gauge T10216 laterally, from left side of vehicle, between gearbox selector lever (A) and selector mechanism cover (B) onto selector shaft as far as stop.
  4. Allow gearbox selector lever to spring back onto gauge T10216 and shift gearbox selector lever backwards in (direction of arrow 2).
  5. Move gear lever in neutral position leftwards into selector lever gate for 1st and 2nd gears.
  6. Guide locking pin T10027 A through hole (A) of gear lever into hole (B) of selector housing.
  7. Now press (in direction of arrow) against lug of securing mechanism for cable end-piece (1) on gate change cable.
  8. Now press (in direction of arrow) against lug of securing mechanism for cable end-piece (A) on gear selector cable.
  9. Pull out locking pin T10027 A from holes of selector lever (A) and selector housing (B).
  10. Using gearbox selector lever (A), shift gearbox in (direction of arrow) to neutral position.
  11. Remove gauge T10216 from selector shaft.
  12. Depress clutch pedal.
  13. Select all gears several times. Pay particular attention to operation of reverse gear lock.
  14. Engage 1st gear.
  15. Press gear lever left to stop and release.
  16. At the same time, a second mechanic should observe selector shaft in gearbox.
  17. When gear lever is moved, selector shaft must move approximately 1 mm (in direction of arrow).
  18. If this is not the case, adjust selector mechanism again.
  19. Install centre left knee cushion 70.
  20. Install centre footwell trim 70.
  21. Clip selector lever sleeve into gear lever panel.
  22. Install charge air hose 21Charge air system; Assembly overview - charge air system hose connections.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
