OM651_evo engine — Mercedes-Benz 2.1 CDI (2.1L I4 16V DOHC Common Rail Piezo)

2.1L I4 16V DOHC Common Rail Piezo · 136-170 hp · 350-400 Nm

The OM651 Evolution is Mercedes-Benz's late 2.1-litre four-cylinder common rail diesel with piezo injectors, 136-170 hp, built from 2018 to 2023. It sits in the facelifted C220d (W205), E220d (W213), GLC 220d (X253) and the GLE 220d (W167). It carries over the OM651 habits, toned down but not gone: the balance shaft can still starve of oil when the strainer clogs, the HPFP cam follower wears and seeds the fuel system with metal, swirl flaps seize in the intake, the EGR cooler cracks and lets coolant into the intake, and short-trip cars block the DPF. This page lists torque figures for the cylinder head, crank pulley, main bearing caps, injector clamps, sump plug and EGR cooler, plus procedures for the W204 gearboxes and clutch, the ancillary belt on W204/W212 and the Sprinter, steering wheels, wheel alignment and the engine itself in the W204, W212, W639 and W906.

Start with the oil: check the level, the spec on the last invoice and the strainer before you blame the balance shaft for idle vibration or an oil-pressure warning. Hard starts, rough running or P0087 point at the HPFP follower, so borescope it before anything else comes off. Coolant loss with white smoke on a cold start means the EGR cooler; do not crank the engine until you know no coolant is sitting in a cylinder. Rough idle with P2004/P2006 is the swirl flaps, and a city car with P2002/P244A is a DPF that has never had a proper regen.

Check first

  • Oil strainer before balance shaft: a clogged strainer gives the same idle vibration and oil-pressure warning.
  • HPFP cam follower: borescope through the bore at every cam cover removal; a flat-spotted roller means the whole fuel system is contaminated.
  • Oil must carry MB 229.51 or 229.52 approval; 6.5 L, 15,000 km. Generic C3 raises follower and balance shaft wear.
  • After an EGR cooler swap, pressure-test the cooling system at 1.4 bar for 20 minutes and crank with glow plugs out first.
  • Swirl flaps seize closed around 80,000-120,000 km: clean the EGR as well, or the new flaps go the same way.
  • Cold-start chain rattle is rarer on the Evolution but still check it; inspect the chain at 150,000 km.

Known failures & weak points

The balance shaft assembly, a long-standing OM651 weak point, can still fail from oil starvation if the oil strainer clogs — worsened by extended oil-change intervals — though this is notably less common on later Evolution-generation engines than on pre-2014 units. Symptoms include low-frequency vibration at idle and an oil-pressure warning. Fix: always check and replace the oil strainer before condemning the balance shaft module.
Swirl flap actuator seizure at 80,000-120,000 km: EGR-side swirl flaps in the revised intake manifold corrode and seize in closed position, causing rough idle, loss of low-end torque, and P2004/P2006 fault codes. Root cause: condensate accumulation in intake combined with EGR soot deposits. Avoid manifold-only flap repair kits — revised manifold has improved flap material but same failure mode if EGR is not cleaned.
High-pressure fuel pump (HPFP) cam follower wear at 100,000-160,000 km: the roller follower on the camshaft-driven HPFP wears prematurely, causing metal contamination of the entire fuel system. Symptoms: hard start, rough running, P0087 (fuel rail pressure low), injector rattle. Root cause: insufficient lubrication of follower bore, exacerbated by extended oil change intervals. Check follower at every cam cover removal.
EGR cooler internal cracking at 120,000-180,000 km: the revised EGR cooler (stainless matrix type) develops hairline cracks at the end-cap welds, allowing coolant ingress into the intake. Symptoms: white smoke on cold start, coolant loss without external leak, sweet smell from exhaust, P0401. Root cause: thermal cycling fatigue. Failure to address causes hydrolocking risk if coolant pools in cylinders overnight.
Diesel particulate filter (DPF) premature clogging at 80,000-120,000 km on urban-cycle vehicles: OM651_evo uses a close-coupled DPF with revised SCR integration; short-trip driving prevents active regeneration, causing DPF differential pressure sensor faults (P2002, P244A). Root cause: low exhaust temperatures below 550°C threshold. Additive-based cleaning is ineffective on fully blocked units. Advise customers minimum 30 km motorway runs monthly.
The single-row primary timing chain and its tensioner were a known weak point on earlier OM651 engines, producing a brief rattle on cold start; the issue is markedly rarer on later Evolution-generation engines but should still be checked if cold-start rattle appears, since a jumped chain risks valve-to-piston contact. Fix: replace the chain, tensioner, and sprockets if wear is confirmed.
Thermostat housing coolant leak at 60,000-100,000 km: the plastic-bodied thermostat housing (integrated with coolant outlet flange) cracks at the upper hose stub or at the housing-to-block mating face. Symptoms: coolant drip from front-right of engine, overheating if ignored, P0128 if thermostat element fails simultaneously. Root cause: plastic embrittlement from heat cycling and incorrect coolant spec (non-MB 325.0 coolant accelerates degradation).

Common torque specifications

Head Bolts Stage 1: 5 Nm (hand snug all bolts); Stage 2: 15 Nm in sequence; Stage 3: 90° angle; Stage 4: additional 90° angle — TTY bolts, single use only, replace every removal (MB N000000004482) unconfirmed
Crank Pulley Bolt 200 Nm + 90° angle, TTY — use flywheel locking tool MB 601 589 00 40 00, do not reuse bolt unconfirmed
Main Bearing Caps Stage 1: 20 Nm; Stage 2: +90° angle — TTY, replace on removal unconfirmed
Injector Clamp Bolt 7 Nm — do not exceed; overtorque cracks the injector bore in the head unconfirmed
Sump Drain Plug 25 Nm — aluminum sump thread; use new copper washer every change unconfirmed
EGR Cooler To Manifold Bolts 20 Nm — torque in cross pattern, use new gasket (MB A6511400080) unconfirmed

Pro tips from the field

When diagnosing vibration or an oil-pressure warning, always check the oil strainer before condemning the balance shaft module — a clogged strainer from extended oil-change intervals produces identical symptoms and is a simpler, cheaper fix.
HPFP cam follower inspection is mandatory at every cam cover removal regardless of reason. Use a borescope through the follower bore before removing the pump — if the roller shows flat-spotting or the bore shows scoring, assume full fuel system contamination and test injector return flow rates before reinstalling anything. Skipping this step and reinstalling contaminated injectors is the single most expensive mistake on this engine family.
The OM651_evo oil specification is safety-critical, not a preference: MB 229.51/229.52 contains specific friction modifiers that protect the balance shaft gear surfaces. Using a generic ACEA C3 5W-30 without the MB approval (e.g., Castrol Edge without MB approval) measurably increases balance shaft and HPFP follower wear rates. Always verify the MB approval code on the bottle, not just the viscosity grade.
When replacing the EGR cooler, perform a cooling system pressure test at 1.4 bar for 20 minutes BEFORE starting the engine. Coolant that has entered the intake manifold during cooler failure pools in the lowest cylinder overnight — cranking without checking causes hydraulic lock and bent connecting rods. Remove glow plugs and crank on starter with plugs out to expel any coolant before first fire-up post-repair.
DPF forced regeneration via XENTRY requires exhaust backpressure sensor values within the range specified by the diagnostic system at idle before the ECU will permit active regen.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
