Total thickness of the crown adjustment wedges - determine — VW
Total thickness of the crown adjustment wedges - determine on VW: 15 steps, 1 torque figure. What to remove, what to tighten and to how many Nm, what to.
Workshop procedure for VW — the exact step sequence and torque figures, straight from real workshop data.
🧭 Before you start
Fits: platform codes 5W9, 5X9, 5X1, 5W1, 5X5, 5W5
- Special tools named: puller, dial gauge
Don't miss
- The external ring must be introduce until the stop.
- A = adjustment wedge of 1.20 mm.
🔩 Torque settings
Values can differ between engine variants — check the code stamped on your block.
| Torque | Fastener / step |
|---|---|
| 25 Nm (18 lb-ft) | Install the differential cover differential housing and tighten the screws |
ℹ️ Always cross-check the exact figure against your vehicle's factory manual before final tightening — a wrong torque can damage the engine. These values are extracted from workshop data and may not cover every variant or revision.
📋 Procedure
- Remove the gearbox housing for (EA 111 engine).
- Remove the gearbox housing for (EA 827 engine).
- Remove the seal from the differential housing with a large screwdriver.
- Remove the external ring of the differential bearing from the transmission housing, together with the wedge "„S2“" with an Puller and fitterVW 244 Band a TrayCP 53..
- Install the external ring of the bearing of the differential housing with a standard wedge of 1.20 mm thickness with a Pressure base or 30-205VW 062, andPuller and fitterVW 295. [Note: The external ring must be introduce until the stop.]
- Remove the seal from the differential cover with a large screwdriver.
- Remove the external ring of the differential bearing from the differential housing, together with the wedge "„S1“".
- Install the adjustment wedges, in the differential cover with a Pressure base or 30-205VW 062, Puller and fitterVW 295, PlateVW 402 and Pressure diskVW 412. [Note: The external ring must be introduce until the stop.]
- Install the differential without the operation gear of the speedometer pinion, in the differential housing.
- Install the differential cover differential housing and tighten the screws with 25 Nm. — 25 Nm (18 lb-ft)
- Assemble the tools according to the suggestion in the illustration.
- Adjust the gauge to zero, considering the initial pressure corresponding to a shift of 1 mm.
- Install the Component VW 521VW 521/4 together with the Component VW 521VW 521/8 on the opposite side of the crown. [Note: A = adjustment wedge of 1.20 mm.]
- With the Component VW 521VW 521/4, move the differential upwards and downwards (arrow) and note the variation found on the centesimal dial gauge.
- ⚠ During measurement in the movement of the differential case, do not turn the differential, because it may alter the result of the measurement. — Add the assembly pressure of 0.40 mm (constant value) to the measurement result (gap noted).

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
