Topping up fluid — VW

Topping up fluid on VW: 17 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.

Workshop procedure for VW — the exact step sequence and torque figures, straight from real workshop data.

17 steps

🧭 Before you start

Fits: platform code 6E1

  • Opens: power steering fluid

Don't miss

  • It is absolutely essential to disconnect battery because hydraulic pump also runs with ignition switched off and hydraulic fluid will escape from system.
  • Fluid level must be approximately in middle of field (arrow).
  • If fluid level is above specified region, fluid must be extracted. If fluid level is below specified region, check hydraulic system for leaks.

📋 Procedure

  1. For vehicles with coded radio, note or obtain code.
  2. Switch off ignition.
  3. Disconnect battery earth strap. [Note: It is absolutely essential to disconnect battery because hydraulic pump also runs with ignition switched off and hydraulic fluid will escape from system.]
  4. Loosen pressure accumulator about 1/2 turn (hydraulic fluid level in reservoir rises).
  5. Fluid level must be approximately in middle of field (arrow).

  1. Tighten pressure accumulator to specified torque. [Note: If fluid level is above specified region, fluid must be extracted. If fluid level is below specified region, check hydraulic system for leaks.]
  2. Then top up fluid.
  3. Close reservoir with cap.
  4. Connect earth strap to battery.
  5. Switch on ignition (hydraulic fluid level in reservoir sinks).
  6. Now shift several times.
  7. Switch off ignition.
  8. Disconnect battery earth strap again.
  9. Loosen pressure accumulator about 1/2 turn (hydraulic fluid level in reservoir rises).
  10. Fluid level must be approximately in middle of field (arrow).
  11. If necessary, correct fluid level in hydraulic system again.
  12. Tighten pressure accumulator to specified torque.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
