Step-by-step renewing piston ring for the VW Touareg I: 17 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.
Workshop procedure for VW — the exact step sequence and torque figures, straight from real workshop data.
🧭 Before you start
Fits: VW Touareg I (7L, 2002–2010)
- Timing position: the crankshaft or camshaft is set and locked during this job
- Renewed: piston ring to piston
Don't miss
- Always ensure that air line (1) is not damaged.
- Assemble upper and lower part, piston (1) must slip into cylinder head (2) while doing so.
- Retainers (1) must be positioned between upper part and lower part and at white markings of air line.
📋 Procedure
- ⚠ Do not clean the air supply unit with chemicals or a high-pressure cleaner.Clean the air supply unit with a lint-free cloth.Always ensure that no dirt enters open air lines, air line connections, connectors and electrical connections. — Remove air supply unit without solenoid valve block .
- Release connector (arrow) and pull it off.
- Pull cable (1) out of clip (arrow).
- Remove bolts (arrows).
- Now, pull cylinder head off piston and place the two components down next to each other. [Note: Always ensure that air line (1) is not damaged.]
- Remove seal (1) and clean contact surface on cylinder head.
- Pull piston (2) in (direction of arrow) towards TDC (top dead centre).
- Remove piston ring (3) from piston (2) without using any auxiliary means (e.g. screwdriver).
- Fit new piston ring to piston. The gap (arrow A) must face towards outside. [Note: The gap (arrow A) must align with anti-twist mechanism (arrow B).The piston ring is properly installed if the anti-twist mechanism is visible in piston ring gap (arrow C).Make sure not to overstretch piston ring.Check piston ring play. Piston ring must be able to be easily turned in both directions within anti-twist mechanism in gap of piston ring (arrow C).]
- Insert a new seal (1).
- Push piston (2) with piston ring (3) opposite to (direction of arrow) towards BDC (bottom dead centre).
- Assemble upper and lower part, piston (1) must slip into cylinder head (2) while doing so.
- Retainers (1) must be positioned between upper part and lower part and at white markings of air line.
- Tighten bolts (arrows) to specified torques.
- Clip cable (1) in clip (arrow).
- Connect connector (arrow).
- Install air supply unit .

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
Seen a figure that does not match your manual? Write to us — we correct it and note when. support@torqfix.com
