  1. Connect cylinder head tensioning device to compressed air.
  2. Use lever (arrow) to slide air cushion under combustion chamber from which valve stem seal is to be removed.
  3. Allow compressed air to flow into air cushion until it lies against valve disc.
  4. Place guide plate VAS 5161/31 onto cylinder head.
  5. Secure guide plate with knurled screws VAS 5161/12 by hand.
  6. Place guide plate VAS 5161/31 onto cylinder head.
  7. Secure guide plate with knurled screws VAS 5161/12 by hand.
  8. Insert drift VAS 5161/3A into guide plate and use a plastic hammer to knock loose the firmly seated valve cotters.
  9. Screw toothed piece VAS 5161/6 with hooking fork VAS 5161/5 into guide plate.
  10. Slide sleeve VAS 5161/8 onto assembly cartridge and insert cartridge into guide plate VAS 5161/31-1.
  11. Attach pressure fork VAS 5161/2 to toothed piece and press assembly cartridge down.
  12. At the same time, turn knurled screw of assembly cartridge clockwise until tips engage in valve cotters.
  13. Move knurled screw back and forth to press apart valve cotters and capture them in assembly cartridge.
  14. Release pressure fork.
  15. Remove assembly cartridge together with sleeve.
  16. Remove valve spring and valve spring plate.
  17. Pull off valve stem seal using valve stem seal puller3364.
  18. Place plastic sleeve (A), enclosed with new valve stem seals (B), onto valve stem.
  19. Lightly oil sealing lip of valve stem seal.
  20. Push valve stem seal onto plastic sleeve.
  21. Carefully press valve stem seal onto valve guide using valve stem seal fitting tool3365.
  22. Pull off plastic sleeve (A) again.
  23. Press assembly cartridge onto valve cotter insertion device from above and pick up valve cotters.
  24. Insert valve spring and valve spring plate.
  25. Insert assembly cartridge into guide plate VAS 5161/31 again.
  26. Press pressure fork downwards and pull knurled screw upwards, turning it clockwise and anticlockwise. This inserts the valve cotters.
  27. Reduce pressure on pressure fork whilst pulling on knurled screw.
  28. Repeat procedure on each valve.
  29. Ensure that all roller rocker fingers contact valve stem ends correctly and are clipped into relevant hydraulic compensation elements.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.

Seen a figure that does not match your manual? Write to us — we correct it and note when. support@torqfix.com
