Removing and installing steering rack, right-hand drive (3rd generation) from model year 2009 — VW

Removing and installing steering rack, right-hand drive (3rd generation) from model year 2009 on VW: 34 steps.

Removing the steering rack from a right-hand-drive VW Touran I (1T0), third-generation rack, from model year 2009. The battery comes off first, then the footwell trim and the universal joint bolt so the column can be pulled off the rack. From that moment the ignition must stay off and neither rack nor column may be turned, or the result can be irreparable damage. Underneath, the wheels, noise insulation, track rod ends, exhaust bracket, pendulum support and heat shield are removed, and the subframe position is fixed before it is lowered on the jack. The rack is unplugged and lifted out to the right. Afterwards the steering angle sender and power steering control unit need basic settings, and the wheel alignment has to be checked.

34 steps

🧭 Before you start

Disconnect the battery, remove the footwell trim and separate the universal joint from the rack. Raise the car, remove the wheels, insulation and track rod ends, detach the exhaust bracket, pendulum support and heat shield, fix the subframe position and lower it on the jack. Unplug the rack and lift it out to the right. Refit with the bulkhead seal lubricated and lying flat, then perform the G85 and J500 basic settings and check the wheel alignment.

Fits: VW Touran I (1T, 2003–2015)

Don't miss

  • With the universal joint off, do not switch on the ignition or turn rack or column.
  • Fix the subframe position before lowering it so the alignment is retained.
  • Lubricate the rack seal with soft soap and make sure it is not kinked at the footwell opening.
  • Carry out G85 and J500 basic settings; recode J500 if parking aid 2 is fitted.
  • Leave the track rod nut on a few turns while pushing the ball joint off.
  • Check the wheel alignment after installation.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
