Removing and installing steering column, electric steering column, RHD vehicles — VW

Removing and installing steering column, electric steering column, RHD vehicles on VW: 47 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.

This covers the electrically adjustable steering column on right-hand-drive vehicles under the platform codes listed below. The column has to be stripped first: airbag unit, steering wheel, combination switch, upper and lower trims and the dash trim below the column. Then the wiring is unclipped, the bracket pushed out of its guide, the steering lock, immobiliser reader coil and column electronics J500 are unplugged, and the earth wire is removed. The articulated shaft bolt comes out, the crash bar is released and the column lowers out of its cross-member guide. Two things set the outcome: the bolting sequence on refit, and readapting the steering afterwards.

47 steps

🧭 Before you start

Disconnect the battery and set the wheels straight, then remove the airbag, wheel, switch module and trims. Unplug the column wiring, remove the earth wire and articulated shaft bolt, take out the crash bar and lower the column out of its guide. On refit, fit a new assembly aid, locate the column in the guide, start and tighten the bolts in sequence and fit a new articulated shaft bolt. Reconnect everything and readapt the steering.

Fits: platform codes 121, BL1

Don't miss

  • Disconnect the battery earth and set the wheels straight ahead before removing the airbag.
  • Fit a new assembly aid to the steering column before installation.
  • Follow the bolting sequence strictly when installing the column.
  • Use a new bolt on the articulated shaft and tighten it to specified torque.
  • Readapt the steering every time the column has been removed or renewed.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
