Removing and installing starter for 6-cylinder 3.2 l or 3.6 l FSI engine with automatic gearbox — VW

Removing and installing starter for 6-cylinder 3.2 l or 3.6 l FSI engine with automatic gearbox on VW: 14 steps.

On the Touareg I with the 3.2 or 3.6 FSI six-cylinder and automatic gearbox, the starter is removed from below and reached partly from the engine side and partly from the gearbox side. The battery is disconnected following the correct sequence, then the noise insulation and the heat shield mat over the solenoid come off. The protective cap is levered off the solenoid nuts, the positive and terminal 50 wires removed, and the lower M12x60 bolt taken out on the engine side. A wire holder, the exhaust bracket and the coolant pipe bolt on the sump have to be cleared before the upper bolt on the gearbox side gives up the starter. Disconnecting the battery in the right order and counterholding the solenoid studs are what protect the electrics.

🧭 Before you start

Disconnect the battery in the prescribed sequence and remove the noise insulation and solenoid heat shield mat. Remove the positive and terminal 50 wires while counterholding the studs, then take out the lower starter bolt on the engine side. Clear the wire holder, exhaust bracket and coolant pipe bolt, remove the upper bolt on the gearbox side and lift out the starter. Refit in reverse, tightening all connections to the specified torque.

Fits: VW Touareg I (7L, 2002–2010)

Don't miss

  • Follow the battery disconnection sequence exactly, or the battery isolator can trigger and damage electrics.
  • Counterhold the solenoid terminal studs with an open-jaw spanner when loosening or tightening the cables.
  • Refit the protective cap and heat shield mat so the solenoid terminals stay covered.
  • Remember the coolant pipe bolt on the sump; the starter will not come free without it.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
