Removing and installing starter (1.4 l petrol engine) — VW
Removing and installing starter (1.4 l petrol engine) on VW: 13 steps, 2 torque figures. What to remove, what to tighten and to how many Nm, what to check.
Changing the starter on the 1.4 l petrol engine, on the platform codes listed below, is a short job with one detail that matters: the order in which the fixings are started. After the battery is disconnected, the terminal 50 connector is pulled off, the plastic cap is removed and the terminal 30 cable taken off the solenoid. Two hexagon bolts, a nut and the remaining bolt come out and the starter drops out downwards. On refit, bolts and nut are run in hand-tight first so the starter seats squarely against the gearbox, then tightened, and the terminal 30 cable goes back on at 13 Nm under its cap. Leaving the main cable loose is a common cause of no-start and burnt terminals.
🧭 Before you start
Disconnect the battery, pull off the terminal 50 connector and remove the terminal 30 cable from the solenoid. Remove the hexagon bolts and nut and take the starter out downwards. Fit the starter, run in the bolts and nut hand-tight, then tighten them, reconnect terminal 50, tighten the terminal 30 cable to 13 Nm and refit the cap.
Fits: platform codes 6V2, 6V5
Don't miss
- Disconnect the battery before touching the terminal 30 cable.
- Start all bolts and the nut hand-tight before final tightening.
- Tighten the terminal 30 cable on the solenoid to 13 Nm.
- Refit the plastic cap over terminal 30 to prevent shorting.

🔩 Torque settings
Values can differ between engine variants — check the code stamped on your block.
| Torque | Fastener / step |
|---|---|
| 13 Nm (9.6 lb-ft) | Tighten wire terminal from solenoid (terminal 30) |
| 13 Nm (9.6 lb-ft) | Tighten wire terminal on solenoid (terminal 30) |
ℹ️ Always cross-check the exact figure against your vehicle's factory manual before final tightening — a wrong torque can damage the engine. These values are extracted from workshop data and may not cover every variant or revision.

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
