🧭 Before you start

Fits: VW Phaeton (3D)

  • Opens: brake fluid
  • Renewed: cylinder head gasket

Don't miss

  • The intake manifold with its gasket is centred on bank 1 and bank 2 of cylinder head by small locating pins. When removing intake manifold, ensure that locating pins are not pulled out and fall into the intake ports!
  • Now carefully clean sealing surfaces of cylinder head and cylinder block. Ensure thereby that surfaces are not scored or scratched (if abrasive paper is used, grade must not be less than 100).
  • Do not remove new cylinder head gasket from its packing until immediately before installing.Handle new gasket with extreme care. Damage will cause leakage.
  • Fit new cylinder head gasket. Inscription (Part No.) must be readable.
  • Ensure dowel sleeves (arrows) are inserted into cylinder block holes and the cylinder head gasket is located.

🔩 Torque settings

Values can differ between engine variants — check the code stamped on your block.

TorqueFastener / step
35 Nm (26 lb-ft)Pre-tighten all bolts
60 Nm (44 lb-ft)Then tighten all bolts

ℹ️ Always cross-check the exact figure against your vehicle's factory manual before final tightening — a wrong torque can damage the engine. These values are extracted from workshop data and may not cover every variant or revision.

📋 Procedure

  1. Remove right air filter housing completely .
  2. ⚠ When doing any repair work, especially in the engine compartment, pay attention to the following due to the cramped conditions:Route all the various lines (e.g. for fuel, hydraulics, activated charcoal filter system, coolant, refrigerant, brake fluid and vacuum) and electrical wiring in their original positions.Ensure that there is sufficient clearance to all moving or hot components. — All cable ties which are opened or cut open when engine is removed must be replaced in the same position when engine is installed.
  3. Disconnect front exhaust pipe from exhaust manifold .
  4. Pull off connectors (1) and (2).
  5. Remove toothed belt .

  1. Remove camshaft pulley .
  2. Remove guide roller (1).
  3. Loosen securing bolts (arrows) and remove rear toothed belt guard.
  4. Pull connectors off all injectors.
  5. Disconnect connector (1).
  6. Disconnect hose (2).
  7. Disconnect connector (4).
  8. Remove bolts (6).
  9. Disconnect vacuum hose (7) from combination valve.
  10. Remove bolts (8).
  11. Remove coolant pipe.
  12. Remove intake manifold. [Note: The intake manifold with its gasket is centred on bank 1 and bank 2 of cylinder head by small locating pins. When removing intake manifold, ensure that locating pins are not pulled out and fall into the intake ports!]
  13. Remove cylinder head cover .
  14. Loosen cylinder head bolts in the sequence given starting at the outside and working inwards and then remove completely.
  15. Carefully remove cylinder head.
  16. Place clean cloths in cylinders so that no dirt or emery cloth particles can get in between cylinder wall and piston.
  17. Also prevent dirt and emery cloth particles from getting into coolant.
  18. Now carefully clean sealing surfaces of cylinder head and cylinder block. Ensure thereby that surfaces are not scored or scratched (if abrasive paper is used, grade must not be less than 100).
  19. Carefully remove metal particles, emery residue and cloths. [Note: Do not remove new cylinder head gasket from its packing until immediately before installing.Handle new gasket with extreme care. Damage will cause leakage.]
  20. Fit new cylinder head gasket. Inscription (Part No.) must be readable.
  21. Ensure dowel sleeves (arrows) are inserted into cylinder block holes and the cylinder head gasket is located.
  22. Fit cylinder head, screw in new cylinder head bolts and tighten hand tight.
  23. Tighten cylinder head bolts in tightening sequence shown working from inside to outside.
  24. Pre-tighten all bolts to 35 Nm. — 35 Nm (26 lb-ft)
  25. Then tighten all bolts to 60 Nm. — 60 Nm (44 lb-ft)
  26. Then tighten all bolts 1/4 turn (90°) further using a rigid wrench.
  27. Then tighten all bolts again 1/4 turn (90°) further.
  28. Install cylinder head cover .
  29. Install intake manifold [Note: It is not necessary to retighten cylinder head bolts after repairs.]

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
